Happy Thursday – 6 new gateways & dynamic pricing

Written by James Koster on February 9, 2012 Product News.

The third WooCommerce drop of 2012 has arrived and it’s a big ‘un! Dynamic Pricing, 6 gateways and a chance for more developers to get involved in the WooCommerce project.

There have been a few grumbles about the relentless Payment Gateway onslaught, and this week is no different with six new gateways (we know you love them really). But we’re also extremely excited to launch Dynamic Pricing, developed by Lucas Stark.

Payment integration is one of the single biggest barriers to some users choosing WooCommerce. Established companies rarely want to change banks / service providers so if we don’t have a gateway which suits a users business, they can’t choose WooCommerce – which we think is a crying shame! So while they may not be so exciting, they’re absolutely vital to the ongoing growth and development of WooCommerce as an eCommerce platform.

Dynamic Pricing

Easily apply bulk discount rules to specific products/user roles

WooCommerce Dynamic Pricing solves pricing scenario problems we’ve had enquiries about since version 1.0. It gives you a powerful system for creating four different types of bulk discounts and price adjustments. The add-on has been designed to give store owners flexibility in controlling prices that no other eCommerce solution offers.

  • Advanced Product Pricing
  • Advanced Category Pricing
  • Simple Category Pricing
  • Simple Role Based Pricing

Lucas has pulled out all the stops and delivered an extremely comprehensive product which is, for me, one of our most exciting to date!

How about an Indian payment gateway like Ccavenue, EBS, or PayU soon? I am quite sure there is enough demand 🙂

    Cheers

Keep in mind, extensions bought outside of WooThemes.com are not supported by the WooNinjas! All support will need to go through the actual developer and the extension typically will not have been tested by the WooNinjas either!

Just fair warning for those who do purchase it. Not trying to sway you just setting support expectations accordingly 🙂

Is there any interaction between the dynamic pricing and gravity forms / gravity forms extension?

    • Ben Gillin
      February 10, 2012 at 12:11 am #

From my understanding the Gravity Forms plugin lets people customize an individual product that has lots of options. This plugin allows for different things to happen based upon different criteria that is met along the way… (ie… quantities of items purchased from specific categories, the user role assigned to the individual, etc).

They would definitely work together. There isn’t any overlap between the two. Also, Lucas Stark is the author of both plugins. 🙂

        No the thing is.

Suppose I have many “options” in a complex form but wish to apply the discount only to some of those. Can the new plugin handle it or will apply the discount only on the ground total?

      • Gaslight
        February 10, 2012 at 7:10 am #

        Another example.

Suppose I have options set with Gravity forms, and a base price set in WooCommerce. Would the dynamic discount extension apply the discount on the base price only or the whole ground total? I’d be interested to make this work only on the base price only for my setup.

Great to see the Dynamic Pricing is out now. Before I go ahead and buy could you confirm that I can just offer automatic tiered discounts based on the cart/basket totals?

I checked the documentation and it all seems to be done on quantities of certain products / categories, rather than something like 5% off £100 and 10% off £200 etc.

    • mike
      February 9, 2012 at 8:23 pm #

Just to clarify, discounts are done based on quantities of products/categories – not cart totals. Sorry for any confusion.

      • Jon
        February 9, 2012 at 8:35 pm #

Ah, you’ve marked the idea as being completed http://woo.uservoice.com/forums/133476-woocommerce/suggestions/2289104-advanced-discount-rules

Though most of the comments on there asked for this (a separate idea was opened for quantity discounts which this extension does fulfil), though it isn’t able to offer that. Will the extension be expanded to cover the scenarios that were asked for in the comments?

It will be far more straightforward to customers to offer that, compared to having lots different discount/quantity levels for different products/categories.

Until then the idea needs to be unmarked as completed 🙁
I was anticipating handing over some more money today! Fingers crossed an update will be quick to come.

        Hi Mike

suppose I have options for a product which I manage with Gravity Forms. Is the discount applied on ground total for a specific product (base price + options) or can I apply the discount only on specific options leaving others unaffected?

        thanks

    • Jon
      February 9, 2012 at 8:23 pm #

I don’t see anywhere on there where you set the amount the cart total needs to be?

It just looks like it has quantity amounts (of items) that you can set rather than a monetary amount which could be anything from 1 expensive item to 100 cheap items.

For example here on there would I set £100 after selecting all the categories?

      • Jon

For Dynamic Pricing, how do you create “Gold Member” status ?

    • Lucas Stark
      February 10, 2012 at 3:09 pm #

Gold Member status would be a role you configure, with another plugin, and assign customers to that role.

Dynamic pricing does not create or manage roles, it can only apply discounts to roles you create and manage by some other means.

        February 11, 2012 at 1:43 pm #

Will it be possible for Dynamic pricing to give discounts for different variations that add up to a certain quantity ?

Eg. A type of item has 4 designs / variations. I would like to give a discount for any 4 designs or variation.

This is huge for anyone that wants to turn their store into a retailer store as well.

WAY more efficient to have retailers buy via the same system as everyone else instead of faxing in bulk orders via old school means.

    Love it!

I had high hopes for the Quantity/bulk pricing and you have delivered on those hopes… mostly…

..apart from the price, too steep, especially compared to other WP based solutions offering similar functionality built into the FREE plugin.

On my tight budget on a current project I can’t justify the cost.

It would have been better to offer a limited feature version of the bulk pricing discount like WPEC, built into the WooCommerce plugin and offer the more advanced stuff as the extension.

    • James Koster
      February 10, 2012 at 12:03 am #

Remember this is an unlimited usage price. Once purchased you can use the extension on unlimited projects and get unlimited support.

This is easily one of our most complex and comprehensive extensions to date and we feel the price is justified given the features it delivers.

Not to mention the fact that our FREE plugin is by itself “the best WordPress-native e-commerce solution available” – not my words 🙂

Also remember there’s a discount coupon to get 30% off if your a club subscriber 😉

    • Ben Gillin
      February 10, 2012 at 7:06 am #

Call me crazy but I’d venture to say that if you are using a tool to make money then it is worth the upfront cost of a small $75 to make that happen. Not to mention the tremendous support from the WooThemes team that comes with the purchase.

      • Sharis
        February 10, 2012 at 9:42 am #

$75 may not be a lot to pay to use a tool to make money, bit many people are on tight budgets and its likely not the only extension you’ll need. I have had to buy $$220 worth to get mine working as my client wants. To be honest, calling this a “Free Plugin” is a bit misleading, when you compare to other free plugins and the functionality included. Just my opinion….

        • Patrick Garman
          February 10, 2012 at 9:48 am #

Keep in mind though as Jay said before… this is unlimited uses. Nothing like other e-commerce plugins where you may get cheaper and sometimes free extensions but you have to pay for a single use license

Not to mention you are always more than welcome to build your own extensions 😉

        • Garrett
          February 10, 2012 at 3:05 pm #

Guys – come on! If you’re going to build a REAL ecommerce business, these costs are tiny.

Want a custom Magento theme from a recognized firm? $25k and up.

And unlike Magento, WP is incredibly upgradeable.

Maybe you’ll spend $200, $300 on extensions. That’s absolutely nothing in the scheme of things.

        • James Koster
          February 13, 2012 at 12:39 am #

As others have said $220 really should only be a fraction of your bill for a comprehensive eCommerce web site. If it’s not, you should be charging more 🙂

We’re extremely happy with the pricepoints of our products and honestly believe you’d have to go a very long way to find a solution even remotely close for the same expense.

It’s not misleading at all. WooCommerce is free. You can set up a fully functional online store for no more than the cost of your web server & your time.

If you prefer the functionality and price of our competitors may I ask why you chose WooCommerce in the first place?

Does this have the ability to hide pricing until a proper customer role is assigned?

    • Lucas Stark
      February 10, 2012 at 3:12 pm #

Since Dynamic Pricing is complex enough, it was decided to leave any private store type functionality out of the release.

Customizing WooCommerce to hide prices for un-authenticated users, or users not in a particular role is relatively straight forward however. See this site, http://www.klm1.co.uk/?post_type=product, for an example of a recent project I was asked to do this exact thing for.

This is unlikely at present I’m afraid. Mainly due to the unique nature of these setups. We may integrate with some third parties at some point but it would still require significant input/configuration on your end.

I get so confused by these “payment gateways”. What would you use if you just wanted to process Credit Cards like any online retailer does? I’m talking MC, VISA, Amex here.

Is that what payment gateways do? If so, why on earth are there so many? And more importantly, how do you figure out which one you should use.

Do target and best buy, and amazon use “payment gateways” when I order from them?

    • Christopher Anderton
      February 11, 2012 at 5:19 am #

Dave. A payment gateway is just as it sounds like 🙂
From Wikipedia: ”A payment gateway is an e-commerce application service provider service that authorizes payments for e-businesses, online retailers, bricks and clicks, or traditional brick and mortar. It is the equivalent of a physical point of sale terminal located in most retail outlets. Payment gateways protect credit card details by encrypting sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, to ensure that information is passed securely between the customer and the merchant and also between merchant and the payment processor”

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payment_gateway

So you need a payment gateway that suits your country and your situation. The different gateway companies has different offers and works different. Before you choose one (or more) you need to check out these companies first. Actually, you can use more than one gateway.

      • dave
        February 11, 2012 at 5:51 am #

Thanks. It just strikes me as odd that there seem to be so many. I’m seeing 38! payment extensions for woocommerce alone.

I can’t think of a simpler thing than needing to process a standard Credit Card for an online business. Are there this many “options” to consider for brick and mortars? I always thought it was pretty straight forward.

There must be one, or a few, of these gateways who are considered the standard industry leader… right? With the rest being niche and small market services?

If so, which ones are recommended for basic, standard, US based, CC transactions?

Thanks for the comment Dave, it looks like a lucrative side of ecommerce to start a payment gateway doesn’t it? Seems to make some users baffled at all of the choices though!

Those big online sites do use payment gateways, Amazon even has their own for others to use (We have an Amazon extension ourselves)!

Nonetheless, what could help you narrow down your choices is to look at first your geographic location. For instance some of our gateways are targeted for certain areas of the world.

Secondly, you can see what cards those gateways accept and if that lines up with what you think your customers will use.

Then of course you need to look at the rates each payment processor charges to use their services, and definitely consider user trust into each option.

Ultimately I don’t think one gateway rules them all. For instance if I were to setup a shop for customers mainly from the states, I’d give them the option to use PayPal, Google Checkout, and maybe another like Authorize.net

It does take a bit of research to figure out what’s best for your shop, but as Patrick also mentioned those are some great gateways to start out with for what you are initially after.
