WordPress 3.5 has arrived!

Written by Matty Cohen on December 11, 2012 Blog, Product News.

Ladies and gentlemen, the day we have all been eagerly awaiting has finally arrived. WordPress version 3.5 is live and available for download!

Packed with exciting new features, WordPress 3.5 is set to take the WordPress community into the next generation of WordPress.

Lets discuss your WooThemes goodies and how they relate to WordPress 3.5.

Can I use WordPress 3.5 with my WooThemes goodies?

Yes, you most certainly can!

Let’s not throw caution to the wind though. While we’ve tested all our products as much as we can, if you have a mission critical site don’t jump in and update without testing yourself somehow.

For example, if you’re using WooCommerce and depend on those sales, definitely test on a staging environment of some sort before updating on your live site. And as always have some sort of backup plan in place as well.

Here at WooThemes, we see version compatibility as a necessity, rather than a feature. We’ve been testing our products on the nightly builds of WordPress 3.5 for the past few months, as well as on the latest release candidate versions leading up to today’s launch.

When upgrading to WordPress 3.5, please ensure to update your WooFramework to version 5.5.2 or higher in your themes, and that you’re using the latest versions of your WooThemes plugins and WooCommerce extensions (as well as WooCommerce).

What’s new in WordPress 3.5?

Version 3.5 of WordPress comes bundled with updated admin screen user interface elements (for example, the new button and text input field designs), a fully rewritten media management system and a bunch of other refinements and improvements (such as removing the “Links” menu section, in favour of using post formats).

For more information on WordPress 3.5, see the official release post.

Why should I upgrade?

We’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone why it’s important to upgrade and ensure that you’re always running the latest versions of all the code on your website. When a new version of WordPress core, a theme or a plugin is released, it’s not always about adding new features and is, more often than not, about fixing bugs (some small and some potentially larger) as well as optimising the code, making necessary omissions and improvements and ensuring that all the code on your website plays well together.

Be sure to upgrade and enjoy the new features of WordPress 3.5, and the joy and peace of mind of knowing that you’re running the latest (and most awesome) version of WordPress yet.

If you spot any bugs when using your WooThemes goodies with WordPress 3.5, please post them directly to our support desk where our ninjas are on hand to assist.

So I guess the latest WooCommerce version is compatible with 3.5 as well?

Yes, we are aware of one little visual issue in WooCommerce 1.6.5.2 while running it in WordPress 3.5, but this is not affecting any functionality. We are working on the first beta release of WooCommerce 2.0, will release that soon and the visual issue is fixed from that release on.

If you do find any issues, please let us know via the support portal.

My variations are not consistently working now. I am not sure what to do…some are and others are not and I have months of work in this site (like we all do). I am stupidly trusting and always just update when I see any updates come through. This is the first time I have had this big of a mess.

I just spent an insane amount of time adding Woo Dynamic Gallery Pro and am not sure if that is it or not. It is at the deer-in-headlights stage where I am afraid to do anything else…

I have no idea how to revert to the previous WordPress. I feel loss and alone….

    Ideas?

    Kathy

May try contacting your web host as they may have a backup from previous day/week that can be restored with previous WordPress version.

In addition, one of the strategies I use is to have 2 WP installations running (sub-domain/directory). This way when new version comes out, I test first to see if all ok, then proceed forward.

Hoping some of this helps – best of luck.

@WooTeam – any timelines on the forums coming back?

The community forums are on their way, but the import of our old posts are taking a bit longer than expected.

I use a staging server and Duplicator to deal with testing. i.e. Development Box duplicates to Staging to Production. Right now, I’ve frozen all the sites and am pulling duplicator install packages to the Staging Server, and applying 3.5 via update, then trying to break the installs.

Personally, I think everyone should be doing this, even if its just another install on a hidden directory, before blindly trusting an update. This way, even if it does blow up, the live site running 3.4.x is still plugging away, serving traffic, and when you agree, just hit update on the live site.

Using WP 3.5, variatons work erratically… Every time I save the product for any reason, all variations crash… I have to link manually again, and then, when I save again for any reason, they loose again their relationshhip between options … It is urgent… HELLLPPPPP!!!!

I think we should backup before proceeding the update. To make sure that everything is safe 🙂

That is a general best practice and yes, you should always make backups before doing updates or any other changes to your website.

In fact, I think the WordPress updater even asks you to do so before clicking the final ‘Update’ button.

having the same issue as kathy, and it seems its a constant, variations for woocommerce dont work in wordpress 3.5. when you edit any product with variations it will erase variations.

To fix i must manually reselect variations from drop down menu everytime i edit a product.

    Fix soon pleas 🙂

I know, I know. Having all the alternate reality testing and staging stuff sounds fabulous to me…but it is like double checking that I have a spare tire or checking the tire pressure before I get in the car. I never think of it until disaster has struck.

Now I will have to carry the burden of guilt and shame of not having properly backed up or tested an update. Hmmm, I may start a website where those of us who did not backup can post pictures of ourselves with handwritten signs hanging around our necks saying “I did not backup properly and updated hastily”.

Hopefully someone can let us know when an update will be in the works so we can plan our workloads around it.

I am developing a website under Editorial theme and while I’ve updated to 3.5 I lost the columns on my posts. I’m using qtranslate plugin all along. Any clues? Thanks.
