The building block philosophy of Storefront

September 6, 2016 - 5 Comments

Today we released Storefront Powerpack, an extension that allows you to change the appearance of Storefront theme for WooCommerce — without touching a single line of code. Powerpack allows anyone to customize their store without dabbling in HTML or CSS, and the results of those customizations can be seen instantly.

As we prepared to release this extension, we realized we’d never written very much about the thinking behind Storefront’s development, and why we’ve chosen to break functionality out into extensions instead of packaging it into the theme itself. “Why not just make Powerpack part of Storefront?” we thought you might ask.

Today, we’re setting aside a couple minutes to explain our “building block” philosophy behind Storefront, and how it’s influenced the development of extensions like Powerpack.

Storefront turns one: how far it’s come, and where it’s going next

November 19, 2015 - 2 Comments

Since we launched Storefront one year ago, our flagship WooCommerce theme has come a long way. It’s seen hundreds of thousands of downloads, plenty of extensions, and even some new clothes in the form of child themes.

Today happens to Storefront’s first birthday. As we like to say, mighty oaks from little acorns grow, and we’ve seen this theme grow from an unassuming — yet sturdy — little nut into a mighty fine oak with plenty of strong branches, leaves, and strong roots in the WordPress community.

Here’s to you, Storefront! Blow out that candle and make a wish.

Storefront’s come a long way in its first year.

Let’s take a deeper dive in and explore Storefront’s impressive growth just a bit more. We’ll also have a closer look at its child themes and extensions (including the newly released Mega Menus!), just in case you missed anything, plus a selection of some amazing shops using Storefront in their own unique ways.

Storefront 1.5 arrives, brings Right-to-Left support

August 19, 2015 - 15 Comments

TL;DR: Storefront version 1.5 has arrived – upgrade via your WordPress dashboard or try it for the first time by downloading a copy here. Enjoy!

The last major release of Storefront saw us add many accessibility improvements and achieve the “accessibility ready” tag on wordpress.org.

That release went a long way towards making Storefront a more rounded solution for store owners looking to make their online shops accessible to the widest audience possible. Storefront 1.5 carries on that theme of enabling, and achieves another coveted tag on wordpress.org.

Storefront 1.4 – now more accessible!

March 31, 2015 - 5 Comments

The ‘accessibility-ready‘ tag on the theme directory at wordpress.org is still quite young, but it’s still a shame to see that in a catalog of thousands of themes, only a handful are considered accessibility ready.

It’s probably not the first feature developers consider adding to their theme – we’re guilty of it ourselves. But when you think about it, it’s probably one of the most important features of all. Consider the purpose of your web site. If your design doesn’t meet certain accessibility standards then it’s never going to fulfil it’s purpose at maximum efficiency. Perhaps worst of all, if your web site is your business (IE an online shop), then you’re potentially losing business. Nobody wants to lose business, right?

Enter Storefront 1.4

We’re proud to announce that Storefront 1.4 meets the criteria required to be assigned the accessibility-ready tag on wordpress.org. If you’re using Storefront, hit that update button (remember to test first) then pat yourself on the back, you just made your site that bit more accessible.

So what did we actually do? Truth be told, Storefront itself was already doing a good job on the accessibility front, there are several significant improvements though.

Nearly 10,000 downloads for Storefront in week one

November 27, 2014 - 4 Comments

We don’t plan to do this every week but thought it would be nice to roundup what’s happened in the seven days since we launched Storefront, our free WooCommerce theme. Overall reception has been really positive, in the comments on WooThemes.com, the reviews on WordPress.org and in the larger community.

We’ve racked up almost 10,000 downloads and 13 five star reviews (yeah ok, some of them were us) and Storefront has been mentioned on:

As of today we were just 300 downloads away from being featured in the ‘Popular Themes’ list on wordpress.org/themes. For now we’ll have to make do with being at the top of page 2. Not bad after one week!
