Extension if fine, even better 🙂
I would be very happy with this!
On a general point, it might be better to move away from the hamburger menu altogether, as it has serious and well-documented usability issues
I like the slide down version myself. But I agree, the current mobile menu looks a little outdated. I would be happy with an extension as well. Adding some options to customize the look of the mobile menu would be a great addition to the extension. i.e. color and transparency of header and or drop down etc.
