WordCamp Cape Town 2012

Écrit par Jeff Pearce on novembre 16, 2012 News.

WordCamp Cape Town once again took place last month, with high hopes of building on the success of last years’ event. This year WordCamp was located in the beautiful surrounds of Kirstenbosch Gardens at the foot of Table Mountain and saw 5 of the WooTeam interacting with the community, including 2 talks, 1 panel discussion and assisting in the happiness bar.

Highlights

Once again the event was organized by Ashley Shaw of LightSpeed. He did a great job of putting together the event, arguably on a larger scale than last years event. There were talks from some influential members of the Cape Town WordPress community, some 3 minute pitches, and it was great to meet some of our WooThemes users as always!

Panel Discussion

Mark Forrester, one of our co-founders, took part in a panel discussion around how they started, funded and managed their businesses from startup idea to successful enterprise.

The Best Tools for the Job

Following on from last years technical talk, I gave a talk on choosing the best tools for the job when it comes to WordPress plugins, themes, and SaaS providers.

Shifting the WordPress Mindset

Making his debut on the WordCamp scene was Matty Cohen, talking about the evolution of WordPress core, themes and plugins, compared to present day and forecasting possibilities for the future.

Summary

Overall it was great to see the community coming out to a WordCamp once again, in bigger numbers than before. While I did miss the 2 track style of last years event, I think it went down very well in the end. It would be great to see some of the international WordPress community come down to the Southernmost tip of Africa – it’s actually quite awesome here, just ask our entire WooTeam – and see how WordPress is being used here.

I’m not completely persuaded that learning and knowledge are similar things. Learning is securing new abilities as well as information. Insight is applying the aptitude or information you’ve learned.
