Mainstream – a blog about everyday things

Written by Mark Forrester on July 23, 2009 Product News.

It’s not an every day thing for us here at WooThemes to give away wonderful free WordPress themes, built on our renowned theme framework, but today is one of those lucky few.

Last week, late one night, Adii spent some time with his good friend – a glass of whisky – and dreamed up Mainsteam in Photoshop – a vibrant blog theme for serious, yet personal bloggers. A couple days later, Cobus spent a day slicing and dicing the Photoshop file into neat standards compliant code, battling the odd Internet Explorer gremlin – minus whisky I might add. Then it was another day, building in our feature rich theme framework which eventually brings us to today where we can launch Mainstream upon the world wide web.

The theme comes with 5 alternate colour schemes, 4 custom widgets, and 3 page templates – not bad for a free theme hey?

Thank you, woo themes. It’s very good free theme, woo themes standard 😀

      Glad you like it! 🙂

And in terms of both design & functionality I can assure everyone that this is top-notch WooThemes coding. Whilst we could’ve added a lot of other features, we tend to keep our free themes uncomplicated, but the WooQuality is always there.

Mainstream is a very nice looking theme. Wish I could drink whiskey and create something like this.

LOL… Mind that I probably only had one whisky or maybe two… So it would have not influenced my design skills in any way.

    Wow… I like it.

Very very clean. This could have been a premium theme easily.

Can the top “category” header links become “pages”

    Thanks for releasing the theme.

There is indeed an option to switch both the top & footer navigation between displaying pages & categories. And that’s just some Woo style right there… 🙂

Ok, this is good for a personal blog not a professional tech blog.

I am expecting a free professional tech blog theme from woothemes.

See… The thing with freebies is that we like giving them, but when people start making demands, we become less inclined to do freebies…

That’s why it says “Free Personal Blog Theme.” If your going to ask WooThemes for a specific design, how about being willing to pay for it? They’re not your WordPress genies, so please don’t tell them what you expect them to design for you.

You have this license on your admin-custom.php file:
// Custom fields for WP write panel
// This code is protected under Creative Commons License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/

That makes you not 100% GPL compliance.

      July 27, 2009 at 12:13 am #

That is an oversight on our part and it needs to be removed. The themes and all of the code, CSS & images are indeed GPL.

        July 28, 2009 at 4:36 pm #

Hi Adii, yeah I saw you forgot to remove it from your file.

BTW, I am not a theme developer and honestly I am against the premium theme developers going GPL. I have seen a daily increase of blogs offering not one but all of yours/others work for free. As a matter of fact, I just Googled another premium developer and the third result was actually a blog offering 21 of your themes in one click. That hurts. And will be worst because these blogs are starting to rank just one position below than the original site. Imagine someone searching for the term “woothemes” and the second result is a blog offering all of your themes for free. (Just happened when I searched for the other company’s name).

Email me if you want to take a look at the one offering your themes.

Take care and keep up the good work.

          July 28, 2009 at 11:48 pm #

There’s not much we can do about that, since the themes are GPL and they can be redistributed by whomever has bought the themes.

We’re not overly fussed about that though and we completely rely on all of the honest people that purchase the themes from us. Those copies that are freely available aren’t even updated to the latest version for example. So if someone really wants to use those free, outdated copies, then they’re not the type of person that we want as a user / member anyway.

Thanks for this theme, I for one would not mind joining the club is there was ever a version of Mainstream that was a Premium theme, after fumbling with tons of themes and spending a pretty penny here and there ie. Thesis 1.5 Developer and Premium Themes well over $200 I’ve finally settled with Mainstream, not bad guys, I’m glad I cruised over to your site at the right time. I’ve always known about you guys but had not signed up but perhaps in the the near future I’ll become an official member in the mean time, congratulations on a great theme. I look forward to your other upcoming premium and free themes, to see if I finally take the plunge and become an official Woo-er lol.

      Thanks for the kind words.

I think for all the buzz around Thesis and other similar themes, simplicity is still key. Mainstream is definitely not our most sophisticated and feature-rich theme ever, but it does what it’s aimed to do and the code base is superior to most free theme alternatives. So it’s great to hear that you have found value in using this theme over other more complicated alternatives.

Hey great theme. However, my search bar seems very different from the one in the preview. The submit button is just the default submit button, not red and also there is a ‘search for:’ text before the box which according to the demo shouldn’t be there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
