Shipment of super sweet shipping supplements for your store

Written by James Koster on May 31, 2012 Blog, Product News.

This week the WooLabs are delivering a shipping themed drop with new extensions for some popular Couriers in the UK and South Africa, plus an extension to the core Local Pickup method & shipment tracking.

Shipment Tracking

With the Shipment Tracking extension you can provide customers with an easy way to track their shipments.

Local Pickup Plus

The default Local Pickup allows your customers to come to you to pick up their purchased products. Local Pickup Plus takes this a step further by allowing you to define one or more pickup locations, and for your customer to select one during checkout. The selected pickup location is displayed to your customer on the frontend: in the Account View Order page, and in the order emails; and is displayed for you in the order admin. That way your customer knows exactly where to go to pick up their product, and you know where to expect them.

Seems it has been fixed. 🙂

The link to the extension page may be fixed but the “View Documentation” link at the bottom of that page is still broken:
        http://wcdocs.woocommerce.com/user-guide/extensions/shipping-methods/local-pickup-plus/
“Error 404 – Page not found!”

        No documentation?

btw, there is no documentation in the developer’s site either!

I think most of the extensions need some more documentation. Not everybody is code-experts, some may need help to understand how things work…

I’ll see if we can get that fixed up ASAP!

There is no code involved setting up this extension though. You create some locations where local shipments can be picked up and those show up for the user to choose at checkout if they chose local shipping.

          Not too hard right? 😛

I think each week there is a shout for Canvas V5, myself included. I would however prefer if woo worked for another few weeks to perfect it rather than release early and buggy!! its such a well used theme by so many that it simply cannot afford to be rushed – so I say take your time woo and get it right 😉

Canvas v5 was set for release this week, but some further testing is required, so ETA is Monday!

It seems that the last few WooCommerce drops have been extensions that should have been integrated into the core free of charge. Shipment Tracking and Sequential Order Numbers are a perfect examples. These are two features which solve problems with the WooCommerce software rather then providing new functionality like the Software Add-on Module.

    • Jeff
      May 31, 2012 at 9:36 pm #

Or… at least free of charge to members.

While there are some good extensions here, when I pay for a monthly subscription, I hope to receive some value above and beyond announcements of further stuff I can purchase.

Lately, I’ve felt that I could have received the same value by simply purchasing the Canvas theme and following these posts.

      Just sayin’…

There are plenty of features added to core free of charge. The extensions are useful/nice to have, but not necessary to run a store.

Tracking for example – we already have a built in customer note system which can be used to add tracking information – this just makes the process nicer for both admin and customer.

So, are we not getting 2 themes this month or have I missed one?

    • Ryan Ray
      May 31, 2012 at 10:17 pm #

Canvas V5 was on track for this week and that would have put it in this month. It’s been pushed to June unfortunately and fortunately. We’re releasing it as tested as possible.

Given everything else we’ve been through, and are still recovering from, I think it’s nothing short of a miracle we are still able to find time to update and release stuff. 🙂

So it does unfortunately appear to be 1 theme release this month, but we’re starting out June with a bang. Besides Canvas release we’ve got big plans for WooDojo, there are also 2 other themes in development right now. Perhaps we can push out 3 themes for you in June to make up for it. 🙂

Feel free to always email us if you want to chat further, we’re all ears!

        May 31, 2012 at 10:35 pm #

To be honest I’d just prefer a bit more emphasis on themes right now. WooCommerce is great but not for me and WooDojo is good but again not my main concern, I’m interested in what I bought the subscription for – themes.

        • James Koster
          May 31, 2012 at 10:53 pm #

The emphasis on themes is still there and they are being designed / built at the same pace as before. Remember the team has grown to accomodate the new avenues in plugin development we’re exploring and in fact the majority of WooCommerce extensions are built by 3rd party developers. It’s definitely not a case of either/or. It’s both.

Perhaps it just seems skewed as WooCommerce drops happen weekly whilst themes are twice a month and releases can be quite spread out?

Ultimately we’re still releasing the same amount of themes per month that you signed up for. But have obviously been thrown off a little with our recent down time & recovery.

          • Sarah
            June 1, 2012 at 11:14 am #

Not strictly true, even if we ignore May and April when we’ve only had 1 per month, the last few months have been 1 theme, 1 commerce theme.

Maybe you should do one commerce every 2 months not every month, I just need more normal themes or tailored themes that aren’t commerce.

            James,

Those of us that have been theme subscribers for a while have indeed seen some changes with the addition of WooCommerce themes. While I can see many subscribers feeling GREAT about the wonderful addition of commerce themes, I hope you also understand that the reduced number of non-commerce themes is still requiring some getting used to.

            >> In 2012 you have released only THREE non-commerce themes in FIVE months!

Here’s a chart that shows theme releases for 2011 and 2012.

            Hi Steve,

We’ve released 4 themes (Unsigned is WC enabled, but not a WC-only theme). Due to the recent incidents with hacking etc, we’ve also been sidetracked, so hope you can understand that we’ve lost some development time due to this.

We do understand that it can be a bit frustrating if you never use a WC theme. There are still a big catalog of themes available to subscribers, including updates and support to this back catalog of themes. Part of our 2012 strategy is also to release themes that can do more, but this also means less themes will be released, as it doesn’t make sense for us to release a lot of Whitelight type themes.

            Magnus,

Thanks for the thoughtful response and clarifying WooThemes’ strategic plans.

My comment was meant as an observation, and certainly not intended to be critical. To the contrary, I continue to exclusively use WOOThemes in no small part due to your company’s capability to innovate and expand your business model – it is this insight that will ensure a long and successful proposition compared to your competition.

As for your recent hacking difficulties, I found your communications and support to be role-model and if any customers are upset, I hope it’s directed at the reprehensive people responsible.

            Cheers,
            Steve

Excellent work going on with WooCommerce. Considering how long it’s been since it’s release, I’m amazed at how fast these extensions are rolling out. Really looking forward to seeing what you’ve got prepared for next month in terms of themes as well as extensions. Let’s hope these themes can make the most out of WooCommerce as well. Keep up the great work ninjas!

Congrats guys, we are in the process of rolling out woo e-commerce onto our first website, with at least 2-3 others in the next 3 months. It looks great, is really easy to use and it does not take the brains of a NASA space-pen inventer to work out that we’ll save not just hours, but days and days of work! Shot! D
