Saying Goodbye to Canvas

October 24, 2017 - 144 Comments

We’ve come to a difficult decision: as of today, we’re no longer selling Canvas.

  • WordPress is constantly evolving, and Canvas is no longer a good option for site builders using newer versions of WordPress – we don’t want to recommend a theme we don’t think will serve you in the future.
  • We’ll continue to provide support for active subscriptions, and for a year from today for lifetime subscriptions.
  • We’ve created a comprehensive plan for all our Canvas customers going forward. We aren’t simply dropping the theme, we are going to walk this road with you.

We know that this is a big change for you, but we believe it will set your sites up for better success in the future. Read on for more details about how we got here and how we can help moving forward.

Goodbye Timthumb, thanks for the memories

December 11, 2014 - 5 Comments

tl;dr  The image resizing script, Timthumb, has been retired. We’re removing Timthumb from the WooFramework. Please update your copy of the WooFramework and run the “Remove Timthumb” feature we’ve added, to ensure your website remains secure and up to date.

At the beginning of October we announced that we would be officially retiring Timthumb, the image manipulation library that has been used in many popular WordPress themes for years, from our themes including our WooFramework.

Why?

The main reason is ultimately improved security, as Timthumb itself is no longer under development, and this means that no improvements, bug fixes, or security holes will be patched by its creators.

WordPress has also come a long way in terms of how it handles images, and there is no reason to use a third party library anymore.  We’ve kept Timthumb in our themes for a long time mostly due to our commitment to backwards compatibility in all our products.

WordCamp Cape Town 2012

November 16, 2012 - 5 Comments

WordCamp Cape Town once again took place last month, with high hopes of building on the success of last years’ event. This year WordCamp was located in the beautiful surrounds of Kirstenbosch Gardens at the foot of Table Mountain and saw 5 of the WooTeam interacting with the community, including 2 talks, 1 panel discussion and assisting in the happiness bar.

Highlights

Once again the event was organized by Ashley Shaw of LightSpeed. He did a great job of putting together the event, arguably on a larger scale than last years event. There were talks from some influential members of the Cape Town WordPress community, some 3 minute pitches, and it was great to meet some of our WooThemes users as always!

Case Study: Warehouse on Woo

March 5, 2012 - 18 Comments

Every once in a while I take some time outside of WooThemes to do some freelance work. However, my reasons for doing freelance work are quite different to most developers (I’m generalizing here, but usually it’s money). My reasons are usually to scratch an itch to play with a new technology, to learn how to use a particular product at WooThemes that I wasn’t part of building, or because it presents a possible business opportunity. Recently I was presented with an opportunity that fulfilled all 3 of those criteria – much to my delight.

Setting the stage

2 close personal friends of mine came to me last year with a business opportunity that would require me to build a system to manage both a warehouse stock and ordering process as well as the customer storefront.  The system would be closed off to only verified users, and a specific process flow would be followed from the initial order to the completion of the order.
