Extending Canvas

June 30, 2014 - 44 Comments

Today’s guest  post is from Jamie Marsland over at Pootlepress. He’s a long-time WooThemes customer, and has become a Canvas advocate over the years. He’s recently launched a bunch of extensions to help Canvas theme owners take their site to the next level over at Pootlepress.

We love Canvas. For us, it’s our go-to WordPress theme. We’ve been working with Canvas for 5 years now, we’ve trained over 2000 people and built 100’s of sites using it.

It gives you control to change design elements of your website without having to know any code. Control is the number one thing our customers want. They want to make a change to their website quickly and easily. They don’t want to have to wait, they want fingertip control. We estimate that Canvas cuts website build time down by 80%. We now build most new customer websites in 1 day. We build a lot of websites 🙂

And, the great thing is design beauty is not sacrificed by speed.

Because we’re busy building so many real world websites with Canvas we have fantastic insight into how our customers want to go beyond what is possible ‘out of the box’.

Theme Pricing Updates

June 4, 2014 - Leave a comment

If you didn’t know, we’re a lean and data-focused company. This means we pay attention to what our customers’ needs through all the metrics we can possibly collect, evaluate what those metrics mean, have conversations with our customers and change course as needed. This enables us to be as efficient with our resources as possible. As our customer, you ultimately benefit as we attempt to make sure we’re spending as much time as we can developing the products, helpful content, and support you need.

We also want to ensure that we’re pricing our products effectively, and packaging those offerings in ways which make sense for you. Unlike in another blog post, we’re actually lowering the price of some of our products and simplifying our offering. 🙂

We have our winners

April 15, 2014 - 7 Comments

A few months ago, we asked our customers to submit any sites they were proud of using our themes. We wanted to see what sites you’ve been creating, what you had to say about the theme you’d chosen and in return we’d give away 3 iPad Minis to our favourite sites.

The response was overwhelming. We received over 500 entries from more than 200 applicants – it was really amazing for our team to see how well our themes were being used and the innovative things our customers had done with them.

6 Dead Simple Security Rules Every WordPress user needs to know – Part 2

March 28, 2014 - 9 Comments

The final instalment of our Security Rules series comes from Jesse Friedman. He’s the Director of Innovation at BruteProtect. They provide a WordPress plugin which will protect you against brute force and botnet attacks.

If you missed the first post in this series, you can catch up here.

WordPress core out of the box is very secure and an extremely reliable CMS. Everything you do after you install WordPress is an opportunity to harden that security, or soften it. And I’ll tell you right now, it doesn’t matter if you’re hosting your Mom’s quilting website (I actually do this) or a government website, you’re going to get attacked.

Measure all the things

I’ve been at WooThemes for a little over 2 years. In that time, we’ve changed and improved a lot of what we do, and how we do it.

We no longer use Subversion, we create plugins and other offerings in addition to themes, and we’ve moved into a bigger office. Those are just a few of the day-to-day areas which have changed. The important changes have been in our philosophy and our approach to how we run Woo.
