Making business SiMPLe

Written by Mark Forrester on March 29, 2012 Blog, Product News.

SMPL is our second release of March and one we are pretty excited about. Given Whitelight’s astounding popularity and sales we wanted another business theme that offered similar functionality, whilst having WooCommerce features built-in that you can easily enable or disable. With that in mind Jay got busy on an idea he had for a killer theme.

We’ve recently had a few comments from particular users who are getting a little perturbed by the fact that we are releasing too many WooCommerce themes, and too few business and magazine themes. Our thinking is that if we can release business themes, with optional WooCommerce facilities (integrated either via child themes or by template files within the theme itself) we are empowering you our users, and your clients, with functionality to grow and scale your site in the future. Who knows what you might want to sell on your site in the future. All the while we are obviously being particularly cautious as to not bloat the theme with code you might not require.

The SMPL homepage with WooCommerce enabled.

SMPL is as the name defines it a simple business theme with a modular design, clearly identifiable header region, featured slider, portfolio section, blog area and loads of widgetized goodness. Not to forget some neat unique WooCommerce features like the “Best Sellers, Staff Picks, and New In” tabber module, as well as the fixed live cart in the top right corner of your browser.

The SMPL blog with some delicious widgets.
The Twitter and Portfolio homepage modules with slick CSS3 animations.

Jay has paid special attention to developing a theme that functions, and looks equally beautiful with or without the WooCommerce section enabled. The theme boasts numerous widgetized regions, as you’ll see on the Appearance > Widgets page, with a unique widgetized region for the homepage sidebar and 4 widgetized regions in the footer.

4 of the 12 alternate color styles, including the minimal style to customize to your heart's content.

With a minimal alternate style, and 11 other custom styles there should definitely be a version that fits your tastes and requirements.

A product page, after adding it to the cart.

As always let us know your thoughts, we always value your feedback and strive towards fulfilling as many of your requests as we possibly can.

This seems to be a very flexible theme. Great work! Any possibility for woocommerce extensions today?

    Looking swee guys!

I particularly like the idea of a minimal style sheet coming with every theme.

This makes life a lot easier for those of use who have to work from existing psds.

    Loving the flexibility of this!

Seems kinda old school in design and why such a narrow width?

    • Chris
      March 29, 2012 at 3:55 pm #

The narrow width on Desktop is the only thing that got me too! But hey its a small change if we want it wider 🙂

      • Fred
        March 29, 2012 at 4:23 pm #

Not really small change since WooCommerce is part of it. If is had a back-end like Canvas where you can choose the width it’d be better. Canvas needs to be responsive… hope that is coming soon 🙂

Width is inconsequential. Legibility is paramount. At this font size I felt this was the correct width to deliver the most legible typography.

To make it wider just increase the font size in the layout stylesheet and everything will scale accordingly.

        Good thought process 🙂

Going to be using this theme for my personal site, might even use the woocommerce part to start selling some stock imagery

I appreciate the SiMPLicity! Are you planning an Woo-Comm solution that allows projects to be funded instead of product purchase? It would be helpful for nonprofits and other ventures seeking to emulate the Kickstarter model. And looking backward, how about a Listings Commerce solution? These are all popular Woo Ideas and low hanging fruit. Cheers!

Nice but narrow for liking. 940-960 would have been better. Quite a few of your responsive designs are narrow in desktop version.

    March 29, 2012 at 5:32 pm #

I think I like it and I like the custom styles too. It is a bit narrow but if the way to change that is easy (as stated above) then I have no complaints.

Oh, man was the theme this month, more than bad. Only a blog theme that I’ve seen so bad and then never again a woocommerce. Does not it slow enough that you have them? I hope next month, there is finally something decent again. Maybe you should change your Nammen of Woothemes in Woocommercethemes

Looking at only the first page of almost half of all themes Woocommerce themes. Does it run the fair to your customers do not shop?

    • Mark Forrester
      March 29, 2012 at 6:50 pm #

Sorry to hear you think that way. As explained above this is a business theme that functions beautifully without WooCommerce. The additional WooCommerce styling and support is a bonus feature of this theme. No need for a WC child theme down the line. For the starting price of $70 for a standard package that’s great bang for your buck.

      • Ronny
        March 29, 2012 at 10:39 pm #

And is to be expected because the increase in the future again Magazon and personal themes are written. But not these boring like the last blog theme. It’s funny that with business themes more effort is given, as in magazines or blog themes.

If all business, portfolio and Woocmerce themes together to get to 65 themes. In magazine, Personal and Tmblog to get only to 38 Why not write more Tumblog themes? I think I’m not the only one who thinks so

        • Magnus
          March 30, 2012 at 12:32 am #

We try to focus on business and magazine themes mainly because these are the most popular with our customers.

            March 30, 2012 at 6:41 am #

then you give you keep the balance of effort is not obvious enough. Of the last 24 published Themes were times 6 magazines or blog themes. This compares to 14 Bussiness or Woocommerce themes.

I like it.. very nice and I will probably be taking the dive to buy some extensions and get going with WC soon.. maybe become a subscriber for themes too.

Some criticism is that the hover transition on products is a bit “aggressive” in my opinion, but that is easily tweaked. It doesn’t seem useful when products have variations to have both a “choose options” and “more details” since they both go to the same place. To add a simple item directly to cart I see the point, but here is my proposal to fix the problem:

Set (via cookies? I don’t know because I suck at coding) a way to remember the last configuration of product options. The customer clicks “Remember product options”, then knows the hovered add to cart will use these. Besides fixing the hover buttons problem, it’s just better UX to not make people choose the same thing from a bunch of dropdowns repeatedly.

Just a suggestion.. I really want this functionality so will find a way. While I am at it, it is bad UX to have dropdowns with too few or too many options. I’d like to see an option to use inputs like the “Button Sets” in Twitter Bootstrap jQuery UI.

This is a great theme because you can use the functionality without using the shopping cart. Something that I have felt missing from other themes.
    Good job.

Outstanding job! Prime time Wootheme. I just tried on my iPad and it looks clean and brilliant.
The footer style is beautifully designed and like the fixed shopping cart div feature.

        Nice job. =)

Only a few problems that I see so far when viewed in vertical orientation on iPod & iPhone Retina displays:
        1. The “tabber module” gets messed up (the tabs line-wrap)
        2. The header image slider is too tiny, and the bullet nav obscures a huge part of it. This bullet nav should go above or below the image.
        http://cl.ly/3p3Y2d081d2S1I1U3y2I

        3. Post images on the home page ( http://demo2.woothemes.com/smpl/ ) aren’t scaling to the full width of the content area when they should.(They scale properly when viewed on a large screen).

Looking forward to seeing these issues fixed!

Nice. I wanted to use it. Unfortunately, it must be a woocommerce. Sad. Wouldn’t it be possible to use it for a simple business site?

    • Ryan Ray
      April 1, 2012 at 6:33 pm #

      Olivier,

You don’t have to enable WooCommerce to use this theme. It works perfectly well without WooCommerce too. Give it a go in the playground if you want to see. 🙂

Oups, great. At first installation of this theme, I had a warning telling me that woocommerce plugin was necessary…

I really like the direction you guys are going with diversifying Business themes. One nit btw, is can you add the “Responsive” tag or whatever taxonomy you guys use on your Themes listing page? SMPL doesn’t show up in the “Responsive” filtered listing.

    Hi!

I think this theme looks great.

But in the product page I would like to have the product text and add to basket button etc. where the widgets are (right of the product image) instead of under the product image. Is that possible?

(Please forgive me for poor explanation, I am not so good at english.)

OK that sounds good. Any pointers on where I can find info / tutorial on how to perform that? I have nearly none knowledge of CSS…

If You think I can pull it off, I am willing to try, but as I said. I would need some hints where to begin.
