Founder Carla Fernandes has extensive experience in the alcohol industry. A holiday job helping her parents run the family liquor store turned into a fully-fledged career at a large redistribution company.

After working her way up to Regional Operations Manager, Carla realized she was missing the “feel” of a family business. She left the corporate world in June 2016 to start her own liquor store with a more intuitive and welcoming browsing experience that doesn’t “feel stereotypically like a bottle store.”

Bar Keeper’s stylish retail store in the Cape Town CBD often hosts free walk-in tastings over the weekend, allowing shoppers to try new gins, wine, beer, and whisky. “Sometimes we [can] get caught in the loop of choosing the same thing over and over again, as it’s a safe choice,” says Carla. “We give clients an opportunity to make an informed decision before purchasing.” Private tastings are also available for those looking to expand their taste.
