What’s new in WooCommerce 3.2: Improved coupons and extension management

October 11, 2017 - 35 Comments

Since our last minor release back in June, we’ve been working on a multitude of improvements to improve the WooCommerce admin experience:

  • Apply discounts to orders using coupons, without the chore of doing manual calculations.
  • See which versions of extensions are tested with new WooCommerce updates, before updating.
  • Improved management features for WooCommerce.com extensions.
  • A simpler, unified shortcode for listing multiple products on pages.

To ensure this update is indeed stable, we’ve been doing plenty of testing on our side; releasing beta versions, testing our own library of extensions and themes, working with customers to do managed updates, and running 3.2 on WooCommerce.com. 👏

WooCommerce 3.2 is also a minor release, meaning it should be fully backwards compatible with 3.1 and 3.0. However, it’s still considered best practice, and recommended, to backup before updating.

We recommend viewing our documentation on how to update, making a backup, updating extensions, and finally updating WooCommerce via WP Admin.

Here are some more details on what’s new in 3.2!

Applying discounts to orders using coupons 🎉

Being able to apply coupons to orders was a popular request on our ideas board, and a common annoyance for store owners. In 3.2 we’ve made lots of improvements to our cart and coupons system to make this possible!

To use this new feature, simply edit an order, click the “apply coupon” button and enter a coupon code. The re-calculations will be done automatically.

You can also remove coupons from orders and have them re-calculate the totals for you!

Read more about this in our development blog.

Heads up! WooCommerce updates will warn you about outdated extensions ⚠︎

We’ve introduced some additional checks before updates run on the plugins screen in your admin dashboard. If an extension is detected as not being tested with the next version, a warning will be displayed. From that point you can either seek an update for the extension, disable it, or test it for compatibility.

WooCommerce updates will warn you about outdated extensions

Our hope is that this will improve general compatibility and incentivise plugin authors to keep things up to date with new releases.

You can read more about this feature here.

New WooCommerce.com extension management features 🔌

We’ve introduced an additional filter that allows you to easily filter your extensions by ‘Active’ to see those that are active on your site.

Once you’ve connected your site to your WooCommerce.com account you will also now see a new notification icon in the sidebar to inform you of any updates that may be available for your extensions.

Additionally, for both agencies and developers, we have implemented a new feature on WooCommerce.com which allows you to share your subscriptions with your clients (great for multi-site subscriptions) removing the need to connect your clients site to your personal WooCommerce.com account.

An improved “products” shortcode

We’ve unified the product shortcodes into one single, consolidated products shortcode which supports the options of all legacy product shortcodes. https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/wiki/Shortcodes-changes-in-3.2.0

…and more!

  • There are now more accessible enhanced select boxes on the checkout and in admin with improved keyboard and screen-reader support.
  • There is a new option to resend order details to customers on the edit order page.
  • The wizard has been revamped to help with shipping, payment gateways, and opt-in to services like automatic taxes and shipping labels. You’ll notice this if you setup a new store on WooCommerce in the future!
  • We added drag and drop sorting on the grouped product field to control display order of products on the frontend.
  • Search results in your store can now be sorted.
  • We added a new option to control the maximum depth of categories shown in the product category widget.

Features for developers ❤️

Developers can look forward to search helpers for products which use our CRUD system and avoid the need for direct queries.

We’re also included a few more helpful debugging tools, for example fatal errors will now be logged and can be viewed in System Status > Logs.

For a more complete list of new things, see the changelog.

You should also read the development blog to see what templates and functions have changed in 3.2.

What to do once your promotions end

January 26, 2016 - 2 Comments

By now, you probably know that customers love a good sale. Discounts, coupon codes, and special offers are enticing, and often good for business, considering how much attention they can drum up.

When it comes to promotions created by owners of small or new online stores, though, finding the time to walk through every step of the process can be tough. The temptation is often there to “wing it” — to simply set up what sounds appealing and hope it works out for everyone.

Winging it might work for a little while, but the decisions you make should be based on data, not guesswork. After your promotions end, you should be reviewing the results and learning what to do differently next time. Otherwise, both you and your customers could be missing out.

Let’s take a look at what you should review after each sale concludes, plus what you should do to ensure each subsequent promotion is a perfect fit for your shoppers.

Creating holiday promotions without deep discounts

November 20, 2015 - 6 Comments

It’s that time of year again. Holiday sales are starting, and the discounts are about to get crazy.

Here we go. (Image credit: jaimelondonboy)

Not every online store can offer deep discounts, 50% off coupon codes, or buy-one-get-one-free deals, though. In fact, for small storefronts or the shops just beginning their journey, it’s hard enough finding the time and energy to run a promotion at all — much less figure out if they have the margin to discount their products.

The truth is, though, that you don’t have to offer an enormous discount to stand out during the holidays. You might not even have to offer a discount at all. The holiday promotion that is the best fit for your store and your customers could be as simple as free shipping, or as affordable as a few dollars off a purchase over a certain amount.

If you’ve been struggling to create a holiday deal that works for your bottom line and still sounds enticing, we have a few ideas for you. Read on to learn about some alternatives to deep discounts that work for everyone, customers included.

The good news? There’s a way to make your customers happy and save yourself some time. This involves setting up and advertising “smart” holiday discounts that automatically apply to products or purchases based on specific criteria.

Today we’ll explore how you can use a solution like Dynamic Pricing to automatically offer discounts or special deals to customers during the holiday season — no maintenance required.

When should you start your store’s holiday promotions?

September 8, 2015 - 7 Comments

September is underway, and now is the right time to prepare your store for the holiday shopping season. We know it seems premature, but we like how Think With Google summed it up:

Any way you look at the calendar, September is a big month for holiday shopping preparation. If it seems a little too early for Bing Crosby and warmed chestnuts, that probably means you’re right on schedule.

One of the biggest aspects of your holiday shopping season will be promotions — what to offer, how much to offer, and when to offer it. It seems like the “when” is the hardest part to figure out, because even if you start planning now, it’s often hard to know when your customers will be shopping and acting on your offers.

Today, we’re here to help you decide when to start your online store’s holiday promotions, including discounted products, coupon codes, and free shipping offers. We’ll explain why timing matters so much, and give you a few ways you can use common sense, research, and information on your audience to determine the best timing for your store’s promotions.
