Case Study: Green Africa Directory

July 4, 2012 - 13 Comments

Green Africa DirectoryBefore I became part of the ever-growing Woo team I worked at a Cape Town-based development agency called Quickonline – while I was there I worked on a number of projects that were built in WordPress as well as other systems. One such project was Green Africa Directory – a green business directory that aims to be the biggest resource of environmentally friendly businesses in Africa. It also features events, jobs and specials relating to green services and businesses.

Building sites with the content builder

February 28, 2011 - 20 Comments

Shawn, our screencasting guru, has been hard at work creating the third video tutorial dedicated to Listings – our directory based theme with a powerful content builder.

In this tutorial, that we believe deserves it’s own blog post, Shawn takes us through the easy process of building a directory site of musical bands. All thanks to the power of the content builder, that makes it easy to create custom post types, taxonomies, and custom fields.

Unique Features

  • Custom Homepage

    Custom Homepage

The homepage contains a unique carousel, recent book listings, book category modules, and widgetized footer areas. All are optional and can be setup in the options panel.

  • Featured Post Slider

    Featured Book Carousel

The featured book carousel can be set up in the theme options where you specify what tag to pull posts from. Those posts are then pulled into this neat, visual javascript slider.

  • Custom Book Author Archive Pages

    Custom Book Author Archive Pages

Thanks to the content builder you can add custom fields to taxonomies. This means you can add an image and biography to an author, with the author being a taxonomy/category. When you view the taxonomy archive you’ll then see this additional content.

  • CPT, Taxonomies & Custom Fields

CPT, Taxonomies & Custom Fields for Book Directory Listings

Once you activate the Bookclub theme a “Books” custom post type is created, with taxonomies for authors, publishers and genres, as well as a few custom fields for the book listings.

  • Affiliate Links

Add Affiliate Links and Purchase Buttons

When adding a book in your WordPress backend you have the option to add a book cover image, an affiliate link to a site where they can purchase the book and another field for the price of the book.

Introducing Listings – the directory based theme for any niche

December 21, 2010 - 74 Comments

This one has been in the oven for a good few months and teased numerous times on the blog, but today we can finally introduce you to Listings – a directory based theme with an advanced content builder.

Ever since we released Estate in July of this year we had the intention of taking it’s advanced niche functionality and making a more generic, yet equally powerful version of it that could be used for any type of niche whether you be a book publisher, a recruitment agency, a car dealer, an art gallery, a photographer’s portfolio site, the list is endless.

When I first conceptualized the design and layout in Photoshop I had no idea ultimately how cool it would turn out thanks to some serious development time on it by Jeff and Matty, with Kirstin taking care of the HTML / CSS and initial WooFramework integration. As you can see it’s been a collective effort by the team.

The Content Builder

At the core of Listings is it’s most impressive feature – the content builder. The content builder allows you to create custom post types, then taxonomies for those post types and custom fields for the posts within those taxonomies. This all thanks to WordPress 3.1. To say this theme is cutting edge would be an understatement. I’d go out on a limb and say it is one of the most advanced content-building themes on the market today.

Hopefully that has excited you as to the theme’s capabilities. If not have a look over the home page modular design and start thinking how you can use this theme on your next project.

Finding design time at WooHQ

October 5, 2010 - 17 Comments

Occasionally at WooThemes we find some time to work on theme designs ourselves, whilst the bulk of it is spent finding and collaborating with other great freelance designers, then developing, marketing and supporting those themes. Both Cobus and myself were lucky enough to jump into Photoshop and push around some pixels a few weeks ago.

Diner - A restaurant theme

Diner is a restaurant based theme that boasts lots of niche functionality empowering restaurant owners with a tool to market their restaurant using a unique food menu page template, boasting custom post types, a contact page with Google Maps & directions integration and even possibly a booking plugin to reserve and manage tables. Expect is very soon.
