Stop Losing Customers to Dead Product Links

Every deleted product leaves behind a trail of broken URLs – from Google search results, Pinterest pins, social media posts, and customer bookmarks. Without a redirect, those visitors hit a generic 404 error page and leave your store forever.

Product 404 Redirects for WooCommerce automatically intercepts these dead-end URLs and sends visitors to the most relevant category page, turning lost traffic into browsing customers.

Why You Need This Plugin

  • SEO-Friendly 301 Redirects – Search engines transfer link equity to the category page instead of indexing dead URLs, protecting your search rankings.
  • Intelligent Category Matching – Automatically picks the most specific, most populated category the product belonged to, so visitors land on a page full of relevant products.
  • Zero Configuration – Install, activate, done. Works immediately on previously deleted products too.
  • Proactive Mapping – Captures product-to-category relationships the moment a product is trashed or deleted, so even permanently removed products are covered.
  • Visitor-Friendly Notice – A subtle, dismissible toast notification lets the customer know what happened and invites them to keep browsing.
  • Dashboard Analytics – Track how many visitors you have rescued in real time: today, last 7 days, last 30 days, and all-time.
  • Redirect Manager – View all saved redirect rules, monitor hit counts, and remove rules you no longer need.
  • Lightweight – No external dependencies, no JavaScript frameworks, no bloat. A single tiny database query runs only on 404 pages.

How It Works

  1. A visitor clicks on an old link to a deleted product.
  2. The plugin detects the 404 and looks up the product slug in its redirect map, the WordPress trash, and the slug history.
  3. It issues a 301 redirect to the best-matching category page.
  4. A small toast notification appears, letting the visitor know the original product is no longer available.

Fully Configurable

Customize the notice text, auto-dismiss duration, and styling with your own CSS. Enable or disable the shop page fallback for products whose categories have also been deleted. Set log retention to control how long analytics data is kept. Everything is managed from a clean settings panel under WooCommerce > Product 404 Redirects.

Built for Performance and Compatibility

Product 404 Redirects adds zero overhead to normal page loads. It only activates on 404 responses, works seamlessly with all major caching plugins and CDNs, and is fully compatible with WooCommerce High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS).

Foire aux questions

Does it work with products deleted before installing the plugin?

Yes. Product 404 Redirects searches trashed products and WordPress slug history, so it can redirect URLs for products that were removed before the plugin was installed. For permanently deleted products where no trace remains in the database, any future deletions are captured proactively going forward.

What type of redirect does it use?

The plugin uses 301 (Moved Permanently) redirects for deleted products and 302 (Temporary) redirects for private products. 301 redirects signal search engines to transfer link equity to the destination page, which is the best practice for SEO.

Will it slow down my store?

No. The plugin only runs on 404 pages - it adds zero overhead to normal page loads. On a 404, it performs a single lightweight database query. There are no external API calls, no JavaScript frameworks, and no additional assets loaded on regular pages.

Is it compatible with page caching and CDNs?

Yes. The redirect happens at the server level before any page content is generated, so it works with all caching plugins and CDNs. The visitor notice uses client-side rendering to remain fully compatible with cached pages.

Can I customize where a specific product redirects to?

Yes. You can manage individual redirect rules in the Redirects tab under WooCommerce > Product 404 Redirects. Edit any rule to point to a specific category or URL of your choice.

What happens if the product's category was also deleted?

When the Fallback to shop page option is enabled (on by default), the plugin redirects to your main shop page instead. You can also create a manual redirect rule pointing to any category you prefer.

Does it work with WooCommerce HPOS?

Yes. Full High-Performance Order Storage compatibility is declared and tested. The plugin does not interact with the orders system, so there are no conflicts.

Can I customize the visitor notification?

Yes. You can change the notice text (with a {product} placeholder for the original product name), set the auto-dismiss duration, and add custom CSS to match your theme - all from the Settings tab.
