Naval Academy Golf Course

The Naval Academy Golf Course is an 18-hole university course in Annapolis, Maryland.

Managed by the Naval Academy Golf Association, it is the home course of the Brigade of Midshipmen, Naval Academy golf teams, active and retired military, USNA faculty and staff, as well as civilian members.

The Naval Academy golf course traces its beginnings back to 1938 when the United States Navy purchased the land surrounding Greenbury Point. This newly-acquired property included an 18-hole course developed in 1928 by the Greenbury Point Yacht and Country Club, but it had become abandoned and run-down during the Great Depression.

Over the next few years, the Navy restored nine of the 18 original holes and contracted prominent golf course designer and architect, William S. Flynn, to develop a full-scale course composed around these existing holes.

“The principle consideration of the architect is to design his course in such a way as to hold interest of the player from the first tee to the last green, and to present the problem of the various holes in such a way that they register in the player’s mind as he stands on the tee or on the fairway from tee to green.”
– William S. Flynn, course architect

After several years of retooling – further expansion of the naval radio facility on the land eliminated two of the holes – Flynn finally completed the layout that exists today. With 6,528 yards of play, its unmatched scenery incorporates the rolling terrain of inlets and surrounding tidal rivers of the Chesapeake Bay, with views of the Bay Bridge in the distance.

The classy, sleek design of the course’s site promotes membership to the club whilst also serving as an online storefront for the Pro Shop. Visitors can leisurely browse golf balls, golf clubs, sportswear, and golfing accessories – everything needed for a fun and relaxing day out on the links.
