We need the ability for users to upload files during checkout. (Note: I have tried a third-party plugin that provides this functionality but (perhaps unsurprisingly) there was a conflict with something and it crashed the site. Better to have 1 plugin do it all, right.

We ran into this exact issue last year when we launched a custom order page that required customers to upload design files. The third-party plugin we tried worked for a week and then triggered a fatal error during a traffic spike. It took us three hours to restore the site. After that, we built a simple native upload solution using the WordPress media library with custom fields. It does not have all the bells and whistles, but it is stable and does not conflict with anything else. We also added file size limits and allowed only certain extensions to keep things secure. Customers seem to appreciate the simplicity, and we have received fewer support tickets about upload issues. One thing that helped was setting up clear instructions on the checkout page about file naming and format requirements. My advice is to keep the upload feature as simple as possible and test it thoroughly under load before going live. A stable basic upload is better than a fancy broken one.
