Many WooCommerce add-ons do not support variations. I’ve also found variations much harder to work with than the other product types in my own custom code. It seems like there is an opportunity to make variations easier to work with. Because of the need for backwards compatibility, it is not practical to consider making variations just another product post but with a parent product meta field but perhaps there are other ways to simplify API access to variations? It would be worth surveying some of the more popular add-ons makers to see what could make them be willing to add variation support to their products.
