Smart coupons works really well to generate both fixed and variable price gift certificates. However, there is a default security feature of limiting the voucher code to just the recipient (or buyers) email address.
If someone buys a certificate for someone but chooses not to enter their email address at checkout (e.g. surprise gift) the buyer receives the code, however it will only work for the buyer’s email address at checkout.
It would be great if this was optional rather than the default.

Hi there, the feature to remove the additional security of adding email addresses to auto-generated coupons is available in the Smart Coupons plugin. You need to enable the “Disable email restriction?” option under the “Usage restriction” tab of the parent coupon that is linked to the product to prevent the email addresses from being added to the Allowed Emails field. For more details, you can refer to the FAQ documentation here.
Just check “disable e-mail restriction” in the main coupon settings and voilà .
‘+1000 And Sam is so true !
‘+1 for this… as with all WooCommerce plugins it seems they are developed to solve one set of problems, but never really engineered to be an actual working solution to the full problem. In this case gift certificates.
Surely the model for this is Amazon and similar, where you have the option of emailing the voucher to the end recipient or printing off the voucher, which you can then put into a birthday card or whatever.
Smart Coupons works fine to a point, but there is a serious lack of what I would consider basic options for managing gift vouchers and appears to be geared more to store credit, which I can’t see being as useful a feature as just offering virtual gift vouchers.
Without this feature I’m now going to have to do what I always have to do with WooCommerce plugins… buy another two or three to handle one situation! Considering the cost of Smart Coupons I don’t think it’s unfair to expect a basic level of operation…
