Easy method to remove the 20 character expert. Unless there is a function for developers to use in their themes, a button or setting could solve the issue.

In the recent Product Add-Ons, we have changed how we validate character limits in Short/Long Text add-ons. Currently, customers can type as many characters as they like. If/When they exceed the character limit, a notice shows up and they are not able to add the product to the cart.
As far as I understand, this is similar to what you proposed and therefore, I recommend upgrading to the latest Product Add-Ons version.
