The way that the customer applies the coupon is via a little box thing that on my theme popups up from the bottom of the screen. This is a rather disjointed user experience – having to watch the bottom of the screen for something that should be a natural part of the checkout. A better option might be an integrated UI on the cart/checkout page. Like the coupon field is.
