Enable Flexible & Styled Product Category Display (Visual Block) for Homepage Collections

Our website design requires a highly visual, multi-column section (e.g., 5-column grid) on the homepage to showcase specific product categories, titled “SHOP BY COLLECTION”.

The Problem:

Currently, achieving this highly visual and stylized layout requires manually linking a Cover Block or Image Block within a Column Block to a specific category URL (e.g., /product-category/dresses/). This is inefficient, prone to errors, and does not automatically pull the Category Thumbnail image set in the WP Admin.

While the standard “Product Categories” Block exists, it lacks the necessary styling and layout options (like displaying 5 narrow, tall columns without modifying the theme’s core CSS) to match modern fashion site designs.

When we try to set this up manually, the categories either do not display their images correctly, or the block logic fails to find the categories we have defined in the backend.

3. Proposed Solution / Feature Enhancement
We request an enhancement to the Product Categories Block or the introduction of a new, more flexible Visual Collection Block with the following capabilities:

Flexible Layout Options: Allow users to define the number of columns (up to 6) and the desired aspect ratio (e.g., 2:3 Portrait or 3:4 Portrait) directly within the Block settings, overriding default CSS for a stylized look like the 5-column collection.

Specific Category Selection: Maintain the ability to explicitly select which X number of categories to display, rather than displaying all categories.

Automatic Thumbnail and Link Fetching: The block must automatically fetch the Category Thumbnail set in WP Admin > Products > Categories and automatically apply the correct Category Archive Link.

Fallback Mechanism: Include a fallback image option if a Category Thumbnail is missing, preventing broken images in the homepage layout.

This feature would significantly improve the usability of WooCommerce’s Block Editor for fashion, apparel, and design-focused stores that rely on strong visual merchandising on their homepage.
