WooTees – Another woocontest

Stop the press. We’ve decided we’ve had enough of wordpress themes and we are now going to be venturing into the t-shirt design business instead.

…… that’s a joke, don’t worry.

April is going to be a monumental month for us at WooThemes as it will be the first time all 5 of us of the WooTeam will be in the same room at the same time!

A few months ago we all decided we would get together for Future of Web Design 2009 in London, England. What better event to attend together to soak up some design goodness from the industry’s best designers.

We’ll hopefully be taking some t-shirts to the event to giveaway and that’s where we need your help – in designing them. We are looking for a kickass design that people want to wear, not your typical promotional tees that get thrown into a cupboard never to be worn. Your design can be trendy, humourous or professional, or even all three – we open to suggestions.

Prizes

– The winner will receive $500, a 6 month developer license, and their name on the collar of the t-shirt gaining you huge street cred.

– The runner up will receive $250 and a 3 month developer license.

– 3rd place gets you a 6 month developer license.

STATUS UPDATE (16th April 2009):

The winners have been announced on the 99designs site:

Congratulations guys, we’ll be in contact with all of you asap if we haven’t already! For those of you who entered but didn’t win we really appreciate your hard work and commitment to WooThemes.

STATUS UPDATE (6th April 2009):

The contest has been extended for another 3 days and has been taken to 99designs.com for maximum exposure. We ask all our wonderful submissions to be entered into the pool there. Never fear though, we’ll still be tracking the Flickr Pool.

Terms and Conditions

  • The design submitted must be entirely your own work.
  • By entering this competition you consent to your design concept being used by WooThemes and possibly even avaliable for purchase at a later stage. First, second and third prize will, as already stated, be awarded a cash prize for their work.
  • The winners will be required to deliver their design in the required format before payment is made, determined by an inspection of the design source file.
Visit the Woo Marketplace for all the tools you need.

    March 24, 2009

Hehe @Jonathan & @David… It depends on the demand for the tees, but we might make them available to order at cost price.

hey adii, what will be topic or subject for the design? can u clarify a bit more on this so we shall get informed and get enough idea before we move our mouse in photoshop etc. thanks

    March 24, 2009

@Rafi – We’re not limiting you guys in any way. We’d just like for you to take our logo / brand / corporate identity and morph it into an awesome t-shirt design. So your design should reflect the way you see WooThemes! 🙂

    Hey Mark,

Do you happen to have the WooThemes logo in Illustrator format?

Also, can we modify your logo to make it 2 colors instead of keeping the gradient?

I have a fun design that I look forward to sharing with you guys.

    Thanks,
    Josh

Hey guys! I submitted a design last night to the Flickr group. I don’t really use Flickr that much and it didn’t give much feedback. I hope it went through okay.

    April 1, 2009

I think there is some problem with the Flickr Group, here my entry:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/wpmad/3406060264

Thats strange, i added an entry for this contest at the Flickr Group and tagged it with “WooTees”, but it says “You’re the only person who has used “WooTees” as a tag.). Another problem is that i cant see the entry at the group as it doesnt appear on there…can someone from the staff please check and fix this?

wpmad: wow your shirt design is cool! i too submitted mine yesterday. it’s my first time so i’m not sure too.. but what i did was add my design pics into my photostream with tag wootees and then add it to the group, and wait for approval that’s it ..

  25. Nate Barnes
    April 2, 2009

    April 4, 2009

I checked the Flickr Pool…5 contestants only?…this is sad. In that case to make all this more fair maybe give Place4 and Place5 a wooTheme of their choice…atleast for the time and efforts they spend.

  31. wpmad
    April 5, 2009

In the desicription of the contest is not included when and where (here or on the Flickr Pool) the winners will be announced…is there a chance to make an update about this please?

    April 6, 2009

    UPDATE:

The contest has been extended for another 3 days and has been taken to 99designs.com for maximum exposure. We ask all our wonderful submissions to be entered into the pool there. Never fear though, we’ll still be tracking the Flickr Pool.

  33. Nate Barnes
    April 6, 2009

Way to let the wind out of our sails over here. 🙁 This is disappointing. I realize that maybe you didn’t receive the number of entries you were hoping for (not enough promotion), but you still had 5 great entries by your own loyal subscribers. To then restart the contest after it was basically over is poor sportsmanship. It’s insulting to those that already entered to ask them to resubmit their entry on another site. I was extremely thrilled to enter this contest too. This is too bad.

  34. Mark Forrester
    April 6, 2009

@Nate: We understand your frustrations, but unfortunately need more options to choose from. We love your design and it’s a strong contender, but we need to extend the reach of this contest beyond our community (of mostly web designers) and therefore decided to place it on 99designs for only another 3 more days.

We do not mean to insult anybody.

  35. Rafie
    April 6, 2009

I’m with Nate in this case. Period.

  36. v-render
    April 6, 2009

are you going to run this contest only on 99designs or every where it is possible ? please clarify ..

  37. Mark Forrester
    April 6, 2009

@v-render The 5 submissions we had on Flickr will all of course still be considered for the prize, the contest is now however solely located on 99designs.

  38. v-render
    April 6, 2009

so should i go further on 99 designs ?

  39. Mark Forrester
    April 6, 2009

@v-render: Yup that would be great 😉

  40. Nate Barnes
    April 6, 2009

@Mark Alright then, I’ve resubmitted my entry at 99 contests. Thanks.

  41. wpmad
    April 6, 2009

You guys move way to slow on this, you schould be prepared to advertise your contest better, whatever…now we must create an account at 99Designs, but you must know that i personaly dont support their business model as i am not the one who will provide “mockups” in order to be considered…this is sikness to look for a solution at your competitor. Maybe for next time when you plan to run contest, just get better organized please and then ask designers to invest their valuable time on your stuff, i hope this will make some sense.

  42. Nate Barnes
    April 6, 2009

I also don’t support comp-work, and most design contests really fall into that category. Usually someone looking to choose from as many free mockups as possible. I would not normally enter a contest site like 99contests for that very reason. I entered this contest against my normal policy because it was hosted directly by WooThemes, in their forum of users, and I felt bad that the contest had no entries. I spent a lot of time developing my idea, even though it seems really simple. I refined the concept as much as possible, until it fit the spirit of the contest as I saw it.

On the 99Contest site, I noticed 35 entries in the four hours from when I saw it go up until I woke up again. Much of them looked thrown together with clip art like work, not really designed.

That being said, I still hope to be considered for this since I put time and effort into making this original and well thought out (as did all the entrants here). I’ve never seen a drop-down menu on a t-shirt and I think it would be an awesome way to catch someone’s eye and then find out what woothemes is.

    Thanks for hearing us WooThemes!

  43. wpmad
    April 6, 2009

done, but dont say later i didnt warn you…99Designs is the worst place to run this contest, you will start to see now a variation of clones/reproduction of our submissions as the kids on there doesnt give a hot about “copyrights”…i know this from experiences on there from the last year and since then i stop to use this site.

  44. Rafie
    April 7, 2009

I told Adii that I have quit from the WooTees contest. But Mark said that:

The 5 submissions we had on Flickr will all of course still be considered for the prize.

Btw, it’s for WooThemes that I design for, that I care. If you were to include my design in the final decision, I would be glad.

But if not, please accept it as a gift from a die-hard fan of WooThemes.

  45. Magnus Jepson
    April 7, 2009

Thanks guys for being patient with us. We realize it may have been a bit of a wrong move to shift it to 99designs, and understand your concerns with this. We hope to learn from this and not make the same mistakes in the future.

It looks like it will be hard to match the quality designs we had before moving the comp anyways 😉

  46. Vina Melody
    April 7, 2009

Some part of me feel really bad for you guys: no sportsmanship. Just be straight that submitted designs were not giving you enough pride to wear.
Another part of me also feel, well of course those designer in 99designs are good!
So … may be one mistake is enough.

I was wondering the same thing, no announcement on here of the other winners. I emailed a few times already and send the source files, but no reply from their end…it would be great if some of the staff get back to us regarding this matters.
