Hello WooCommerce Development Team,
I would like to suggest an improvement to WooCommerce that could make it significantly easier for merchants to ship dangerous goods, particularly under the **Limited Quantities (LQ)** provisions.
We operate an online store selling coatings, resins, adhesives, and other chemical products. Many of these products can be shipped as Limited Quantities, but the necessary transport information is not currently available as standard product data in WooCommerce.
**My suggestion is to introduce dedicated dangerous goods fields at the product variation level.**
### 1. Minimum requirement: Net quantity per component
The most important feature would be the ability to enter the net quantity of a product, with support for up to two separate components.
For example, a two-component coating kit may contain:
– Component A: 5 kg
– Component B: 2.5 kg
Both components are sold together as one WooCommerce product variation, but each component has its own net quantity and may have different dangerous goods classifications.
The merchant should be able to enter:
– Component 1: Net quantity, with a choice of kilograms (kg) or litres (L)
– Component 2: Net quantity, with a choice of kilograms (kg) or litres (L)
The second component should be optional for single-component products.
This is the **minimum functionality** I believe WooCommerce should support.
### 2. Additional dangerous goods information
Ideally, WooCommerce would also provide structured fields for:
– UN Number
– Proper Shipping Name
– Primary Hazard Class
– Packing Group
– Packaging Type
– Tunnel Restriction Code
For multi-component products, the relevant classification details should be available separately for each component where necessary.
### 3. Why this matters
Today, merchants often have to enter dangerous goods information manually into external shipping systems, or rely on custom integrations.
If WooCommerce provided these fields as standardized product and variation metadata, shipping plugin developers, logistics platforms, and third-party carriers could retrieve the information through the WooCommerce REST API.
This would make it considerably easier to develop shipping integrations that support dangerous goods, especially shipments under Limited Quantities (LQ).
It would also allow merchants to keep their existing variable products and two-component kits without having to split them into separate products or order lines simply to communicate the correct net quantities to the shipping provider.
### 4. The broader opportunity
WooCommerce already supports product weights and dimensions, but dangerous goods shipments require additional information that cannot be derived from the total shipping weight alone.
Introducing structured dangerous goods metadata would create a common foundation for shipping integrations, without requiring WooCommerce itself to determine transport compliance or implement carrier-specific shipping rules.
I believe this would be a valuable improvement for merchants in the coatings, chemicals, automotive, marine, and industrial supply sectors.
I would be interested to know whether this functionality has already been discussed or is being considered for future WooCommerce development.
Thank you for considering this suggestion.
Best regards,
