A More Flexible WooCommerce Checkout: Custom Fields, Layout, and a Minimal Experience for Digital Stores

Hello WooCommerce Team and Community,

I would like to propose improvements to WooCommerce’s checkout customization capabilities, particularly for digital-only stores and marketplaces.

This request is not simply a matter of personal preference. Over several years, we have repeatedly received feedback from customers asking for simpler checkout forms, fewer unnecessary fields, and a cleaner purchasing experience, especially for stores that sell exclusively digital products.

WooCommerce is a powerful e-commerce platform, but creating a truly clean, professional, and customized checkout experience can still require multiple third-party plugins or custom code.

1. A Truly Minimal Checkout for Digital-Only Stores

WooCommerce already handles shipping requirements for products marked as Virtual. However, removing shipping calculations does not necessarily eliminate every unnecessary address section, heading, or explanatory message from the checkout experience.

For example, customers may still encounter headings such as “Billing and Shipping Address” or messages like:

“Enter your billing and shipping address to match your payment method.”

For a store that sells only software licenses, e-books, digital media, online courses, or other non-physical products, these elements can make the checkout unnecessarily confusing and cluttered.

Even when using third-party checkout field editors, store owners may find that some sections and messages are difficult to remove or customize.

I understand that certain businesses need billing information for tax compliance, invoicing, fraud prevention, or payment processing. The goal is not to remove essential information indiscriminately, but to let store owners decide which information their business actually requires.

I would like WooCommerce to provide:

A native minimal-checkout mode for digital-only stores.
The ability to hide unnecessary billing and shipping sections, headings, and explanatory messages.
Conditional field visibility based on whether the cart contains physical products, virtual products, or a combination of both.
Independent controls to make individual fields visible, hidden, optional, or required.
The ability to customize checkout fields without relying on multiple third-party plugins or custom code.
2. More Control Over Checkout Layout and Buttons

Field visibility is only one part of checkout customization. The overall layout, placement of elements, and appearance of buttons also have a significant impact on the customer experience.

I would like WooCommerce to provide a more comprehensive native checkout editor that allows store owners to:

Reorder checkout fields and supported sections.
Control the placement and alignment of checkout buttons, including the Place Order button.
Customize button appearance, dimensions, spacing, and layout through accessible editor controls.
Customize checkout headings, labels, and explanatory messages.
Apply conditional display rules without requiring custom PHP or JavaScript.
Create different checkout layouts for different product types or business models.

The goal is to make it possible to create a modern, elegant, and professional checkout experience without extensive technical work.

3. Greater Control Over the Order Summary

The order summary is another area where store owners need more flexibility.

Different businesses need to display different information. A digital marketplace, for example, may prefer a compact summary that shows only essential product and payment information rather than a rigid, generic layout.

I would like store owners to be able to:

Choose which product details appear in the order summary.
Control the visibility of product images, descriptions, quantities, and other relevant information.
Customize the arrangement and presentation of order summary sections.
Hide unnecessary elements where appropriate.
Adjust the layout to create a more compact checkout experience.

These controls should be available through the native WooCommerce editing experience wherever possible.

4. Why This Matters

Over the years, we have repeatedly heard from customers who want unnecessary address fields and other irrelevant checkout elements removed from stores that do not sell physical products.

These requests highlight a broader usability issue: store owners need greater control over what customers see during checkout, not merely the ability to enable or disable a few predefined fields.

Third-party plugins can provide workarounds, but depending on several extensions for fundamental checkout customization adds complexity, creates potential compatibility issues, and makes it more difficult to maintain a lightweight store.

A more flexible native solution would benefit digital-only stores, online course platforms, software marketplaces, digital publishing businesses, and conventional stores that need more control over their checkout experience.

Conclusion

I encourage the WooCommerce team to consider expanding the native checkout customization capabilities, particularly within the Checkout Block.

Store owners should be able to decide which information customers must provide, how the checkout is arranged, how its buttons and order summary appear, and which elements are relevant to their specific business.

This would reduce the need for third-party workarounds and help WooCommerce deliver a cleaner, more professional, and more conversion-friendly checkout experience.

Thank you for your continued work on WooCommerce. I hope this proposal encourages further discussion within the community.
