WooCommerce Subscriptions 9.3.0: protected billing on gifted subscriptions, one charge per early renewal, and renewal fixes

This release keeps billing details on a gifted subscription with the person who paid for it, closes the gaps that let an early renewal charge a customer twice, and fixes a set of renewal and checkout issues that affected order totals and payment dates.

Gifted subscriptions stay billed to the purchaser. Before this release, a gift recipient paying a renewal could overwrite the purchaser’s billing name, email, and address, and in some cases the purchaser’s renewal invoices went to the recipient. Recipients can still update the shipping address on a gifted subscription, but they can no longer view or change its billing details. When a downloadable product is removed from a gift or switched away, the recipient’s download links stop working.

Early renewals charge once. A double-click on Pay now, or a browser preloading the link, could charge the saved payment method twice for one billing period. Each Pay now link now works once. Early renewal links in reminder emails take the customer to their subscription to confirm, instead of emptying their cart and sending them straight to checkout.

Two things your customers will notice:

  • Pay now links sent before 9.3.0 stop working. A customer who clicks an old link can open the subscription from My Account > Subscriptions to get a new one.
  • Renewing early from a reminder email takes one extra click. The customer lands on their subscription and chooses whether to renew.

Renewal and checkout fixes.

  • A subscription’s next payment date is no longer pushed out by an extra billing period when it’s recalculated in certain cases.
  • Percentage-based add-ons are now charged on subscription plans that set their own price. Before, they were dropped from the cart total.
  • Undoing an item removal in My Account no longer fails on some stores, which had left future renewals at the lower amount.
  • Paying a pending or failed renewal through checkout keeps product subtotals and coupon discounts correct, and category-restricted coupons only discount products in their categories.
  • Customers who log in at checkout while paying a renewal are no longer charged twice when the same product is already in their cart.
  • If dedicated processing for subscription renewals can’t track its progress, it now turns itself off and falls back to normal processing instead of leaving scheduled renewals stuck.
  • Payment retries and the Subscriptions Health Check now run on hosts that couldn’t run them before, including WordPress.com.

This release also fixes plans created since 9.0 failing to add to an existing subscription, placeholder prices on Product Bundles and Composite Products, slow sorting by Last Order Date on stores with thousands of subscriptions, and several admin errors.

How to get it

Update to WooCommerce Subscriptions 9.3.0 from your WooCommerce dashboard. All fixes apply automatically, with no setup required. If you use dedicated processing, check that it’s still on under WooCommerce > Settings > Subscriptions after updating.
