Ask subscribers for tracking consent at sign-up with MailPoet 5.36.0

MailPoet 5.36.0 adds a tracking consent checkbox to your sign-up points, and a matching segment filter so you can target people based on whether they agreed to be tracked. It also fixes open and click rates that could report above 100%.

You can now add a separate tracking consent checkbox to MailPoet subscription forms, WooCommerce checkout, and the WordPress registration and comment forms. Subscribers choose at the point of sign-up whether you can track their opens and clicks, so consent is captured up front and tied to the moment they joined your list rather than handled after the fact. This builds on the Subscriber choice setting from 5.35.1, which let existing subscribers opt out — together they cover both new and existing subscribers.

There’s a new segment filter to go with it. You can now build segments based on tracking consent: subscribers who allowed tracking, subscribers who opted out, and subscribers who were never asked. That last group matters if you have a list built before consent was being collected — you can find those people and ask them.

On reporting, open and click rates on automation and welcome email statistics could show above 100%, which made those numbers unusable. That’s fixed. Campaign stats also no longer lose your link filter when you switch tabs, so you keep your place instead of re-filtering. In the block editor, footer links now follow the underline setting from your email styles rather than ignoring it.

How to get it

Update to MailPoet 5.36.0 — the fixes apply automatically. To start collecting tracking consent, add the consent checkbox to your subscription forms in the MailPoet form editor, and enable it for WooCommerce checkout and the WordPress registration and comment forms in MailPoet settings. The new tracking consent filter is available when you create or edit a segment. Note that this release requires WordPress 7.0 or higher — update WordPress first if you’re on an older version.
