Frequently asked questions

How can I show live Canada Post shipping rates at checkout in WooCommerce?

Canada Post Shipping Method for WooCommerce is a live rates extension that connects your store to the Canada Post Ratings API and displays real Canada Post rates during checkout. Once connected, shoppers see quotes based on their address, the items in their cart, and your packing setup, on both the cart page (via the shipping calculator) and the checkout page. It covers domestic, USA, and international parcels, so customers get accurate pricing instead of a flat guess.

Which Canada Post services does this extension support?

Canada Post Shipping Method supports a broad range of Canada Post services across three destinations. Domestic options include Regular Parcel, Expedited Parcel, Xpresspost, Xpresspost Certified, Priority, Library Books, and Lettermail. USA options include Expedited Parcel USA, Xpresspost USA, Small Packet USA Air, and the Priority Worldwide Envelope, Pak, and Parcel USA services. International options include Xpresspost International, International Parcel Air and Surface, Priority Worldwide Envelope, Pak, and Parcel, and Small Packet International Air and Surface. You can enable or disable individual services so customers only see the ones you offer.

Do I need a Canada Post account to use this extension?

Yes. Canada Post Shipping Method pulls rates directly from Canada Post, so you connect your own Canada Post account during setup. Registering with Canada Post is free, though Canada Post may ask for a credit card on file for their own fees and transactions. WooCommerce never sees or stores your payment information. After you connect, the extension uses your account to return rates.

Can this help me stop overcharging or undercharging for shipping?

Yes, that is one of its main benefits. Because Canada Post Shipping Method returns live rates based on the destination, package weight, and dimensions, customers are quoted what shipping actually costs rather than a flat rate that may be too high or too low. This can help protect your margins on heavier or long-distance orders while keeping local shipping fair for nearby customers. You can also add surcharges or discounts per service to fine-tune the rates shown.

Can I add a handling fee or adjust the rates customers see?

Yes. Within the Services settings, you can rename and reorder Canada Post services and apply price adjustments to each one, either as a percentage or a fixed dollar amount. Adjustments can be positive to cover packaging or handling costs, or negative to pass along a discount. This gives you control over the final rate shown at checkout while still basing it on live Canada Post pricing.

How does the extension decide how my products are packed?

Canada Post Shipping Method offers three packing methods so rates match how you actually ship. Pack Individually sends each item to the API separately and combines the quotes. Weight-based packing sums the cart weight and splits it into parcels up to the 30 kg limit for domestic, USA, and international shipments. The built-in box packer groups items into boxes you define by height, width, length, weight, and maximum weight, using a volume-based approach. The box packer is the recommended option for most stores because it more closely reflects real packaging.

Do my products need weights and dimensions set?

Yes. The Canada Post API and the built-in box packer need weights and dimensions on your non-virtual products to calculate rates. Without this information, the extension cannot return a quote. Setting accurate weights and sizes is the single most important step for getting reliable rates at checkout.

Can customers see delivery time estimates and choose their preferred service?

Yes. You can enable a delivery estimate so an expected number of days appears next to each rate, using data returned from the Canada Post API. You can also decide how many options shoppers see: offer All Rates so customers pick the service they want, or offer the Cheapest Rate only so a single price is shown. Giving customers a clear choice of speed and cost can improve the checkout experience and reduce hesitation.

Can I offer insurance, signature on delivery, or age verification?

Yes. Canada Post Shipping Method includes additional options you can apply to parcels, including extra insurance coverage, signature required, and proof of age. These are helpful if you ship valuable, fragile, or age-restricted items and want added protection or delivery confirmation.

What is the difference between the Commercial and Counter quote types?

The quote type controls which set of Canada Post rates you show. Commercial uses the rates and discounts tied to your Canada Post account, including Solutions for Small Business (formerly VentureOne) members, so it reflects any negotiated pricing. Counter returns the standard retail rates you would receive in person at a Canada Post location. Choose Commercial if your account has business pricing you want customers to benefit from.

Does the extension support Lettermail for small, light items?

Yes, with some conditions. You can enable Standard and Registered Lettermail rates for small, lightweight shipments. Lettermail is not part of the Canada Post API, so those rates are calculated using the box packer and set prices rather than live quotes. There is a 500 g weight limit per Lettermail parcel, and if a cart exceeds that with Lettermail enabled, the extension returns a Lettermail rate covering multiple parcels.

Is this extension a good fit for my store?

Canada Post Shipping Method is designed for WooCommerce stores based in Canada that price in Canadian Dollars and want accurate, real-time Canada Post rates at checkout. It is well suited to merchants shipping physical products domestically, to the USA, or internationally who want quotes to reflect actual weight, size, and destination. If you ship a mix of small letter-size items and parcels, the combination of Lettermail and parcel services gives you flexible coverage.

Does this extension work with the WooCommerce cart and checkout blocks?

Yes. Canada Post Shipping Method is compatible with the WooCommerce cart and checkout blocks, so it works whether you manage those pages with the block editor or classic shortcodes. It is also compatible with High Performance Order Storage (HPOS), which helps keep larger stores running smoothly.

Why am I not seeing any Canada Post rates at checkout?

If no rates appear, a few settings are usually the cause. Confirm that you have connected your live Canada Post account, that your store base country is Canada with Canadian Dollars set as the currency, and that your products have weights and dimensions entered. The shipping method also needs to be added to a shipping zone before it will appear. If Canada Post services are temporarily down for maintenance, rates may pause until service is restored.

I have a problem with tax calculations based on the shipping address. I cannot access support although I have an active subscription. Request page cannot find my webstore although the default that appears is my webstore.

Hi susantarnowhairclippersca - I created a ticket so that we can get both of these issues resolved. You should see an email at your registered address now, which we'll use to troubleshoot these problems. If you don't see that email, be sure to check your Spam/Junk folder in case it ended up there but if you don't see it, let me know in a reply here. Thanks!

It was not a good fit for our business
Canada Post would not properly interphase with this plug-in. Canada Post could NOT accommodate >1 user (who was responsible for processing orders). Workaround = we will use FLAT RATE box for mail orders.

It routinely underestimates the cost of postage.
I mail using Expedited Parcel and Flat Rate box. The cost of an Expedited Parcel is almost always too low. I resent that I have to make up the difference in cost myself. Sometimes a customer will choose Xpresspost and it is ALWAYS figured at less than the actual cost.

Lettermail and Oversize Lettermail Rates are outdated
On May 6th, Canada Post increased their lettermail and oversize lettermail rates. This is a feature that is not "live" in the plugin (non-api), so Woocommerce needs to update the database to reflect the price change. I've message and created a service ticket and even attached the price change PDF from Canada Post. This is a PAID plugin for Canada Post shipping. Disappointing that Woocommerce it not updating this basic mail pricing feature in a timely manner. The rates should have changed the day of the planned and announced price increase. Please update the lettermail and oversize lettermail pricing asap.
