Updated Stripe Checkout Experience – mid-2025

Stripe and WooCommerce are working together to ensure that our shared customers have access to the latest features of the Stripe plugin, such as a more modernized checkout experience and buy now pay later payment methods like Affirm and Klarna.

After July 1, 2025, Stripe and WooCommerce will no longer be making important performance and feature enhancements to this integration. Merchants should upgrade to the standard checkout experience for a modernized checkout with expanded payment options.

Updating the Stripe plugin to version 9.6.0 or later will automatically migrate your site to the standard checkout.

Depending on your current integration, you may have one or two actions:

Update to standard by July 8

If you are using the legacy checkout experience, it will no longer be supported as of July 8, 2025. This means that you will not receive essential performance and feature enhancements. We advise that you upgrade to the Standard Checkout Experience for a modernized checkout with expanded payment options.

If you update your plugin version after July 8, you will automatically receive the standard checkout.

To check if an update is available for the Stripe extension:

  1. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Advanced Settings section.
  3. If the “Enable the legacy checkout experience” setting is checked, uncheck it.
  4. Click Save Changes at the bottom.
  5. Place an order or two in test mode to confirm that things are working normally.

Update to version 9.7 on July 22

Version 9.7 of the Stripe plugin will be released on July 22.

To help keep your site secure, you should always update your plugins to their latest versions. This gives you all the most recent bug fixes, features, and security updates.

We also recommend enabling automatic plugin updates. Follow these instructions to allow auto-updates.

If you do not receive automatic plugin updates, you can update to version 9.7 by following the below steps:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Dashboard > Updates.
  2. Click the Check again link to check for plugin updates.
  3. If an update for the WooCommerce Stripe Gateway plugin is available, install it.
  4. Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.

Affirm and Klarna promotional trial

With version 9.7, Affirm and/or Klarna will be automatically enabled and available at a promotional price. This promotional pricing lasts from July 22 to October 22, 2025. After the promotional period, pricing for these payment methods will revert to their standard rates.

Please refer to your Stripe Dashboard and email for details on your promotional price and standard rate.

Affirm and Klarna are buy now pay later payment methods. This means customers can finance purchases and pay them back in fixed installments over time. Businesses who offer these payment methods receive the full payment upfront and can gain up to a 14% increase in revenue.

What to expect: 

  • On July 22, 2025, update to version 9.7 of the Stripe plugin if you do not receive automatic plugin updates. 
  • With version 9.7, Affirm and/or Klarna will be enabled at a promotional price from July 22, 2025 to October 22, 2025.
  • After October 22, pricing for Affirm and Klarna will revert to their standard pricing.

Opt-out of Klarna and Affirm before July 22

To opt out of upcoming Klarna and Affirm payment method enablements:

  1. Go to Settings > Payments > Payment methods in the Stripe dashboard.
  2. Click the payment method configuration labelled WooCommerce Inc. configuration
  3. Select Change settings from the gray banner at the top of the page.
  4. Select Opt out from the drop down menu for each applicable payment method.

NOTE: If you do not see a grey banner, your account may not be eligible for this promotional trial.

Opt-out of Klarna and Affirm after July 22

You can turn off these payment methods at any time from the WordPress dashboard:

  1. Navigate to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods.
  2. Locate the method(s) you’d like to enable under the Payments methods section.
  3. Uncheck the box associated with the payment method(s) you’d like to disable.
  4. Click Save changes.

Similarly, you can turn off these payment methods from the Stripe Dashboard by following these steps.
