Finding design time at WooHQ

Occasionally at WooThemes we find some time to work on theme designs ourselves, whilst the bulk of it is spent finding and collaborating with other great freelance designers, then developing, marketing and supporting those themes. Both Cobus and myself were lucky enough to jump into Photoshop and push around some pixels a few weeks ago.

Diner - A restaurant theme

Diner is a restaurant based theme that boasts lots of niche functionality empowering restaurant owners with a tool to market their restaurant using a unique food menu page template, boasting custom post types, a contact page with Google Maps & directions integration and even possibly a booking plugin to reserve and manage tables. Expect is very soon.

The Listings Directory Based Theme

Listings is built on the firm foundation that is our estate agent listing theme. We’ve had quite a few requests for a more generic listing directory theme with a powerful, yet customizable search module and custom taxonomy. So in theory it could be used for anything from a car sales listing site, to a city guide, to a job board. Think of the possibilities.

  7. I suppose there might be a more relevant place to post this, but I don’t know how closely you guys pay attention to old posts, and general inquiries in the forum sometimes gets lost very quickly.

I just wanted to point you to this contest:
    http://www.managementexchange.com/m-prize/

If not only for yourselves, but for people like me who feel like I’ve got a lot to learn from this company, I would be thrilled to see you partaking in any of the categories in this contest.

I plan to enter myself, with a “Taking the work out of work” story from the jMonkeyEngine project.

  9. @Mark I will be curious to see how your directory theme is structured and hope it will be as follows:

    – Categories used for geographical values. Using hierarchies we can drill down from continent, to country, to region, to town/city etc.

    – Custom taxonomies used for specific attributes relating to our field, e.g. for vacation rentals we could have separate taxonomies for ‘amenities’, ‘features’, ‘sleeps’, ‘rooms’, ‘setting’,’style’ etc etc

We would need screen where we could set this all up, i.e. categories renamed ‘locations’, and we can set up the custom taxonomies we need appropriate to our content.

Then, in the sidebar we could filter results along the same lines as the following site:

    http://www.airbnb.com/search/v3

Scribu has developed a plugin which, I guess with some customization, could be used adapted to function in exactly the same way as the above site, and many other sites which use this technique.

Also required, and one that will no doubt be demanded by the crowd (your customers), is the ability to sell listings and for advertisers to create and manage their listings.

I’ve often thought that using aMember would be great for this because it has all the transactional functionality built in, and is great for controlling access to content areas which, in this scenario, is the login and listing management screens that advertisers will use to create and manage their listings.

I know that bears another separate expense, and aMember requires some customizations, but an idea worth exploring.
