Setup and Configuration

Getting started

There is nothing to switch on. Once the extension is active, every product image can be labeled straight from the product editor:

  • Go to: Products > edit any product > Product data > AI image labels .
  • Every image the product uses is listed: the main product image, each gallery image, and on a variable product each variation’s own image.
  • Choose an AI label for each image: AI generated , AI modified , AI (unspecified) , or No AI .
  • Optionally tick any AI alterations that apply, such as Background removed or Color modified. These appear to shoppers in a tooltip.
  • Click Update on the product.

Labels belong to the image rather than to the product, so an image reused across several products only needs labeling once. Images added during the current editing session appear in the list after you save the product.

Labeling an existing catalog

For stores with imagery already in place, work from the Media Library instead. Go to Media , select any number of images, choose an AI label from the bulk actions menu and apply it. This works in both list and grid view, and the AI Label column shows at a glance what each image currently carries.

Designing the badge

Go to Settings > EU AI Label > Label Studio to match the badge to your store. You can set a quick style preset, background and text color, border radius from square corners to a full pill, one of three sizes, any of the four image corners, and an optional Sparkles, AI pen or Robot icon.

The live preview reports the text-to-background contrast ratio and tells you whether it passes WCAG AA before you save. If you leave the colors alone, the badge chooses a light or dark variant automatically based on the image behind it, so it stays readable on both bright and dark photography. Badge text is not editable, which is what keeps it correctly translated in all seven languages.

Moving disclosures between stores

Disclosures travel with WooCommerce’s own product CSV. Exporting from Products > All Products > Export adds two columns, AI disclosure and AI alterations , whose values line up with the Images column: the first value is the main product image, then each gallery image in order. Variations export as their own rows. On import the two columns are recognised automatically, and an empty value leaves an image’s existing disclosure alone rather than clearing it.

Usage

Shoppers see a small badge in the corner of any labeled image, wherever that image appears รขโ‚ฌโ€ shop and category listings, the product page, the gallery, related products and in-content images. Images labeled No AI , and images never labeled at all, are left completely untouched.

Where you have recorded alteration details, they appear in an accessible tooltip on the badge รขโ‚ฌโ€ for example: This image was altered with AI. Changes made: Background removed, Color modified. The badge is reachable by keyboard as well as by pointer, and its accessible name is read out to screen readers.

Behind the scenes, every change is written to a tamper-evident audit log under Settings > EU AI Label > Audit log , recording the date, the file, what changed and who changed it. The log is sealed with a hash chain, so if an entry is altered directly in the database the page reports an integrity failure and names the entry where the chain breaks.

Troubleshooting

A badge is not appearing on an image. Check the image is not labeled No AI , which shows no badge by design. Badges attach wherever the theme renders an image through standard WordPress image functions; if a page builder or optimization plugin outputs only a bare image URL, get in touch and we will take a look at that template.

The badge is hard to read on some images. Choosing custom colors in Label Studio switches off automatic contrast. Either clear the custom colors to get the adaptive light and dark variants back, or adjust them until the preview reports that contrast passes WCAG AA.

A variation image is missing from the AI image labels tab. Save the product once. The list is built when the product editor loads, so images added during the current session appear after a save.

A CSV import did not apply disclosures. Confirm the AI disclosure column was mapped on the import mapping screen, and that its values line up positionally with the Images column for that row. Reordering a product’s gallery between export and import shifts which image receives which disclosure.

Frequently asked questions

Does the extension detect AI images automatically?

No, and that is deliberate. You choose the disclosure for each image. A tool that guessed would produce disclosures you could not stand behind if you were ever asked to explain them.

Which disclosure should I choose?
  • AI generated - the image was created by AI rather than photographed.
  • AI modified - you started from a real photograph and AI altered it.
  • AI (unspecified) - AI was involved, but you are not stating whether the image was generated or modified. This is the honest choice when a supplier sent you the image and you do not know its history.
  • No AI - the default. No badge is shown.
Does it change or re-upload my image files?
  • No. Your image files are never modified, copied or sent anywhere. The badge is markup rendered over the image, and the disclosure is stored alongside the image as metadata.
  • The contrast analysis that picks a light or dark badge reads the file on your own server and caches the result. No external service is involved at any point.
Can I change the badge wording?
  • No. The wording is translated into English, Polish, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch and follows each visitor's language, so allowing it to be overwritten would break those translations.
  • Everything about how the badge looks is configurable in Label Studio: colors, size, corner radius, position and an optional icon.
Is it compatible with High-Performance Order Storage?

Yes. The extension declares HPOS compatibility and never reads or writes order data. It works only with images and their metadata.

What happens if I deactivate or uninstall it?

Uninstalling removes the extension's settings. Your disclosures and audit records are deliberately kept, so reinstalling restores your history instead of starting over.

Does this make my store compliant with the EU AI Act?

No extension can promise that. EU AI Label is an independent transparency tool: it publishes the disclosures you decide on and keeps a record of them. It is not legal advice, does not guarantee regulatory compliance, and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the European Union. If you need to know what your business must disclose, speak to a qualified adviser.
