Stop losing renewals to expired cards

Every month, a share of your subscription renewals fail for one avoidable
reason: the customer’s saved card expired. By the time the failed-payment
email goes out, the customer has often already churned. Token Expiry
Notifier finds those cards ahead of time and asks the customer to update
their payment method before the charge is ever attempted.

Key Benefits

  • Fewer failed renewals — customers update their card before it expires, not after a declined charge.
  • Runs on autopilot — an automatic monthly scan finds every expiring token across every customer with no manual checks.
  • Built to scale — notifications send through WooCommerce Action Scheduler, so stores with thousands of saved cards never hit a timeout.
  • No duplicate emails — a dedicated history table tracks what’s already been sent, so a customer never gets the same notice twice in one month.
  • Fits into your existing workflow — settings live under WooCommerce > Settings, and notification history appears in WooCommerce Analytics.

How It Works

1. Install and activate the extension.
2. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Token Expiry and turn on notifications.
3. Choose which day of the month notifications go out, and whether to catch cards expiring this month, next month, or both.
4. On your chosen day each month, the plugin scans saved payment tokens and emails customers whose card is due to expire — using a subject and message you control.
5. Track results in WooCommerce Analytics or the notification history table: who was notified, which card, and when.

Use Cases

Subscription stores

If your store runs recurring billing, expired cards are one of the biggest preventable causes of involuntary churn. Catching them a month ahead gives customers time to act before a renewal ever fails.

High-volume stores

Stores with thousands of customers can’t check card expiry by hand. Because notifications run through Action Scheduler, the monthly scan and email queue scale without extra configuration or server load.

Multi-gateway stores

Token Expiry Notifier reads from WooCommerce’s own saved payment token system, so it works across any gateway that stores tokens there — no per-gateway setup.

Compatibility

  • WooCommerce 9.0 and above
  • WordPress 6.7 and above
  • Fully compatible with WooCommerce HPOS (custom order tables)
  • Works with any payment gateway that saves tokens to WooCommerce’s payment token system

Frequently asked questions

Does this extension work with the block-based checkout?
Yes. Token Expiry Notifier works independently of checkout — it scans saved payment tokens directly, so it works the same whether your store uses the block-based checkout or the classic shortcode checkout.
Is this extension compatible with WooCommerce Subscriptions?
Yes. Token Expiry Notifier is built for exactly this use case — catching expiring cards before a subscription renewal fails.
Does this work with HPOS (High-Performance Order Storage)?
Yes, Token Expiry Notifier fully supports HPOS as well as classic order storage.
What version of WooCommerce and WordPress do I need?
Token Expiry Notifier requires WooCommerce 9.0+ and WordPress 6.7+, with PHP 8.2+. We recommend always running the latest versions for the best experience.
Will this work with my payment gateway?
Token Expiry Notifier reads directly from WooCommerce's own saved payment token system, so it works with any gateway that stores tokens there — most major gateways, including Stripe and PayPal Braintree, do. Gateways that store card data outside of WooCommerce's token system won't be detected.
Do you offer support?
Yes, we provide dedicated support through the WooCommerce.com helpdesk. If you need assistance, please submit a support ticket from your WooCommerce.com account.
Can I try before I buy?
We offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can purchase with confidence.
Will this slow down my store?
No. The monthly expiry scan and all notification emails run as background jobs through WooCommerce Action Scheduler, so they never add load to a customer-facing page request.
Can I customize the notification email?
Yes. The email subject and body are fully editable from WooCommerce > Settings > Emails, with template tags for the customer's name, card type, last 4 digits, expiry date, and more.
