Rewarding your loyal customers

As a store owner, customer loyalty is important to you. Customer loyalty leads to repeat sales and, ultimately, a satisfied customer. As individuals, we enjoy the feeling of receiving “something for nothing”. If I can spend on a product now and earn a discount which I can redeem at any future purchase, I’ll be more inclined to make the purchase.

How do we, as store owners, incentivise customers to purchase with us again?

This incentive is a three-part operation; selling a great product or service, ensuring a pleasant purchasing experience, and rewarding customers for purchasing from your store. You already offer a great product or service and WooCommerce already offers a pleasant purchasing experience, so what about the reward?

Introducing Points and Rewards for WooCommerce

Our Points and Rewards extension for WooCommerce enables your store to offer loyalty points for purchases or for certain other actions taken by your customers on your online store (such as signing up for an account). You decide how many points are awarded for each Dollar (or other unit of currency) spent, and how many units of currency each point converts into when redeemed.

WooCommerce Points and Rewards

Reward your customers for purchases and other actions with points which can be redeemed for discounts.

Granular points control

With the Points and Rewards extension for WooCommerce, it’s possible to determine how many points are earned on a per-product, per-category or global level… or all three in different areas of your online store. This level of granular control enables you, as the store owner, to incentivise purchasing of a specific product or category of products over another, by offering a greater points reward at that level.

Redeeming points

When setting up your points and rewards system, you can determine the conversion rate from points to currency. For example, 100 points could be worth $1 on your store. You can also set a maximum discount at the cart, product category or product level, to limit the discount available.

We’ve rigorously tested this extension to ensure, to the best of our testing, that the system cannot be gamed or made to redeem points that are not applicable.

Managing your points and rewards system

As important as it is to ensure your customers have an amazing purchase experience, and are rewarded for their purchase, it is as important that your points system is easy to manage. With the intuitive administration system in the Points and Rewards extension, you and your store manager can quickly login and see an overview of points earned per-customer, update their points earning and see a points log that is filterable by customer, event type and event dates. This points log can assist in identifying where your customers feel most incentivised.

  1. Super does this work with WooCommerce Subscription extension also? I would like to offer points each month to people who consistently stay on the subscription.

    • It should do so, as the subscription is usually treated as a new payment/purchase.

If you find it’s not working as you’d expect it to, let us know in the help desk. 🙂

      • Btw, any affiliate marketing extension coming soon? Would be awesome if we can have an option to give certain affiliates woo points instead of coupon codes =)

      • How does it handle subscriptions though? For instance the problem right now with discounts on the cart is that it reduces every future subscription by that amount. Example:
They go and buy a subscription at $100 a month and use 50 points to get $50 off. Their subscription bill is now $50 at checkout and they pay. The issue becomes now every future month they’re only billed $50. This is a problem!

        • This is partly due to your payment gateway and which one you use. You see if you do not store the credit cards on the site end (a little bit of PCI compliance needed) you do not have control to charge the cards so therefore your subscription will only be stuck on the initial amount the customer pays. If you use redirect gateways like paypal and so on you will always be stuck on this – you need to start handles credit cards directly on your site and then this of course can cause more pci and security issues so its a tough balance. So my point is your payment gateway plays a massive role in this

          • Yes you’re absolutely right – it’s because the subscription plugin is built to use paypal first, all other gateways second. My point is that saying this “works” with subscriptions is half true – yes people can use the points for the purchase.

*However* if they do and they happen to pay the entire balance with points you’ll be giving away a membership to that person for life for free. And unfortunately the profit margins on 0 aren’t very high!

It’s by far the biggest shortfall in the subscription/coupon behaviour of Woocommerce and all subsequent “reward” or coupon extensions.

          • Spot on wmacmill, it will be changed with 1.4. Although with the release of this I’m also looking at pushing out the changes earlier as 1.4 is still a ways off.

        • I’d advise logging a ticket where we can explore this further within our particular use case. 🙂

          • Thanks. I’ve logged the ticket and attempted to outline some possible solutions by changing the way woocommerce handles coupons on subscriptions using the Paypal trial period functionality in their recurring payments.

          • Also just read this in the subscription documentation: How do I discount the first billing period?

Due to popular demand, version 1.4 of Subscriptions (still in development) will be changing the default behaviour of normal WooCommerce coupons. It will apply cart, product coupons to the first billing period only. This will also improve compatibility with gift certificate extensions.

If you need initial payment only coupons before version 1.4 is released, you can create a subscription with a sign-up fee equivalent to 1 recurring payment and 1 billing period free trial (eg. $5 sign-up fee, then $5 / month after 1 month free trial). Then create a “Sign-up Fee” coupon. An ugly workaround, but something which is available right now.

    June 13, 2013
    • What would you be looking for in terms of search exactly? The plugin does allow you to filter by any customer, so between that and ordering by the points balance you should hopefully be able to easily find what you’re looking for.

  6. Is this plugin extensible somehow? Or do you plan to expand the actions to reward users with points? For example, I’d really like to give some reward for users who sign up with Facebook or Twitter…. or users who post certain amounts of posts in my bbpress forum, or who invite a person to register, and so on…

    Gaslight
    June 13, 2013
    • The plugin is extensible, yes. 🙂

We have created developer documentation to elaborate on this. 🙂

      Matty Cohen
      June 13, 2013
      • To expand further on this, if there are any plugins that you’d specifically like to see integrated with Points & Rewards with new actions, be sure to open a support ticket with WooThemes so they can let the plugin developer know that there’s demand for this. That way both the other plugins and Points & Rewards will grow more valuable over time.

        • Just to pop in here it looks like the WP-Achievements plugin found on CodeCanyon is now supporting integration with the Points & Rewards extension.

          Yay for Woo’s new extension!

        • Love to see it integrate with disqus and with WordPress blogs, so that authors who write blogs can get points and also people who comment get points – this would be amazing to be honest.

        • Would love to use Ambassador plugin with Points to allow customers to receive points for referrals. Ambassador already has the ability to give out points instead of $ but the Ambassador extension doesn’t really do anything but sync woo with ambassador. Being able to have customers get credit for referring others would be amazing social marketing.

  10. Do they have to they have to be called “Woo Points” or can they be called something else upon installation? Nothing wrong with “Woo” per se, but it might be a little incongruous on my site since most of my customers don’t know what Woo is…

  11. Hi there! I just discovered this new extension – just what I was looking for!! Thanks Woo-Team!
One question – is there a functionality with this that allows users to purchase an item in the store using their ‘woo credits’? And if not, will there be a possibility for this feature in the extension? Thanks 🙂

  13. Just a quick question, are there any notifications setup for this plugin – as in, when a user subscribes to the newsletter widget or when they create an account on the site are there notifications that get emailed or appear on screen to tell the user they now have “20” new points for example?
