You can now sign into the WooCommerce app with one scan

Logging into the WooCommerce app once meant typing your store URL on a phone keyboard and navigating a credential screen that split logins between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. We knew it could be frustrating — especially on mobile devices. That’s why we’ve modernized our login experience to make it faster and easier for merchants to get into their accounts.

Designing the solution

When our company launched the month-long hackathon, Radical Speed Month, mobile code wrangler Jiří Malina and I teamed up to build a fix for this frustrating experience for merchants. Getting there meant finding the right solution and shipping changes across WooCommerce core, WP Admin, WordPress.com, and both the iOS and Android apps simultaneously. It was no small task, so we had to be sure we picked the right solution.

When deciding what to build, we dug into the data and found an important insight: most merchants installing the app were already logged into their store on their desktop computer. So, instead of asking them to retype everything on their phone’s tiny keyboard, we built a new flow: a QR code on desktop to securely login to the mobile app in seconds.

How it works

There’s no setup needed — just update your WooCommerce plugin and mobile app. The QR code is available once you’re on WooCommerce version 10.9.1 and app version 25.2 (on either Android or iOS), or your Woo store is connected to a WordPress.com account (via Jetpack).

Once you’ve updated, here’s how to login:

  1. Log in to your store on a desktop computer and open woo.com/mobilelogin.
  2. If logging in via Jetpack, go to Security to generate the code.
  3. Tap the “Scan QR code” button.
  4. Scan the QR code that appears on your phone, and you’ll be logged in!

The QR code login is available now for all users. If you don’t see the option yet, make sure you’ve updated to WooCommerce 10.9.1 and mobile app version 25.2.
