The ultra-readable & ultra-flexible Flipflop theme

Flipflop is a responsive, ultra-readable theme geared around news publishers. With impressive column generator functionality for posts and pages, clean, large typography, a modular homepage that can be re-arranged thanks to widget components & a featured slider Flipflop has all the tools to customize this theme for whatever niche.

Flipflop was designed by Firman Firdaus who we’ve worked with previously on other popular newspaper/magazine themes – The Journal and Blogging Stream. FlipFlop brings a modern edge to our portfolio with the current industry trend of larger type, with lots of white space for minimal distractions. Content being the king.

As can be seen above, thanks to the column generator functionality that is packaged in Flipflop, and previously in the Editorial and Announcement themes, the post and page layouts are hugely flexible and ultra-readable.

Easily place column breaks using the columns button in the WYSIWYG editor, and select your layout in the FlipFlop custom settings panel.

On the theme demo we have installed our freely available WooDojo plugin to enable further functionality that has received styling in Flipflop – namely the Twitter and Instagram widgets in the sidebar and footer regions, as well as the WooTabs widget. This plugin works out the box with any theme and we strongly urge you to give it a test drive.

The post, category and author templates also sport neat, visual layouts.

Another great job by the in-house team of Mike Krapf and Matty Cohen who took Firman’s photoshop design and developed it into a slick WordPress theme that we are really proud of. We welcome constructive feedback and hope you enjoy this addition to our theme portfolio.

  2. Nice one, guys! Very clean. One of my new favorites.

PS. What are the chances you guys can start adding a pinboard style template as part of your standard set? The Archives is close, but having a responsive pinterest/Flipboard/Pulse style content presentation is becoming almost a requirement these days for user experience on tablets and smartphones. 😉

    Keep up the great work!

    • That sounds interesting! Any examples of this being done in WordPress themes elsewhere?

      • I’ve got tons of examples. I’ve done a lot of research in to this. The content “discovery” behavior utilizing the tiled format is extremely engaging, especially on tablets and smartphones.

        Simple Example:
        http://www.elegantthemes.com/preview/TheStyle/

A really great implementation example is:
        http://www.notcot.org/
html 5 responsive design, using the Pinterest style tiled display. Also, the footers at the bottom of the page: the dot matrix link to all pages is absolutely brilliant, followed by related sites and their thumbnails and advertising.

        • PS… I can repost without the competitor reference. lol. Although they can’t really compete with Woo! 😉

This one using your e-commerce plugin and they had just release it yesterday on Themeforest http://themeforest.net/item/commerce-versatile-responsive-wordpress-theme/2569077 Take a look at their homepage for all items, it just cool and for reference in the future *looking for magazine/news like yours by now with those style.

Wookmark – A jQuery plugin to create a dynamic, multi-column layout (for Pinterest-like layout)

    • Hi Tony, Don, Eric,

If you’re looking to provide a Flipboard-like experience to iPad visitors, I’d advise using OnSwipe ( http://onswipe.com/ ). This can sit on top of the theme and create the Flipboard-like experience for those on mobile devices that support it. 🙂

      • Thanks, Matty. I looked into it, tried it out and traded emails with them. Good for simple sites. Unfortunately Onswipe doesn’t work as slick as they make it out to be in their videos. Please, their system can only handle simple content. No forms. No e-commerce. It’s cool… but I suspect that as stuff like HTML 5 and jQuery mature, Onswipe is not as attractive to use.

  7. Responsive columns are a killer feature!

As a former print designer I’m really excited to see type stuff like this on the interwebs.

As much as it’s cool to see ipad magazines in all of their glossy glory, I can’t help but think that I should be reading it on the web and not in an app.

These kind of layouts are a step in that direction I think …

I would love to make a web mag that looks like an app and navigates like one too – So viewing it on a tablet felt exactly the same.

Has anyone else seen a WP theme that acts like that?

    Anyway keep it up Woo!

  8. This comment is off topic, but I wanted to put in a request to bring back the full text in the RSS feed, instead of the summary. It looks like a switch was made with this post, based on the excerpt in my feed reader.
I enjoy having the ability to read WooThemes posts anytime, even without an internet connection 🙂
Thanks as always, WooTeam! Keep up the great work!

  9. Whoa. WHOA. If there’s a WooTheme that would ever out-Woo Canvas, this is it. This is a flagship theme here – I predict best seller or at the very least #2 to Canvas, long term. Well done, WooThemes! I’ll be using this for 2 sites that are begging for this kinda of flexibility, readability and responsiveness.

  15. Looks like a fantastic theme. The only thing I would change is when you go to category pages (business, tech, science), the big headline says “Archive,” and then the tiny little text below it says the category name. I would think you would want a large headline with the category name, like a newspaper section header. Make sense?

    Adam J. Blust
    June 28, 2012
    • Completely agree with you. I think having ‘archive’ as a title on any theme just doesn’t make sense any more, but here in particular it looks wrong.
