Why choose KOMOJU

Adapt your checkout for a $163B eCommerce industry

Japan has the fourth-largest eCommerce market in the world and is projected to reach $701.8 billion by 2034, growing at 10% every year. On top of that, Japanese consumers spend up to $455 on a single online purchase, $77 more than the global average.

But most global checkouts aren’t optimized for how Japanese consumers like to shop, leading to abandonment rates well above the global average, with payment methods as the primary reason.

To successfully tap into this market, optimizing your checkout for these native purchasing habits is essential. While offering Visa and Mastercard works for most markets, Japanese shoppers like to pay in cash at local convenience stores (konbini), use digital wallets, pay by carrier billing and even use bank transfers to shop online. And if they can’t use these methods, they’ll look elsewhere.

That’s why KOMOJU lets you connect your WooCommerce store to every major Japanese payment method through a single extension.

  • All-in-one checkout activation: Accept credit cards, convenience store payments, and local digital wallets through a single setup.
  • Smooth guest checkout: Shoppers complete their purchase natively on the checkout page using their preferred local payment methods, directly driving higher conversion rates and revenue.
  • Fast payout cycle: no more waiting months to use your money. With KOMOJU, you can choose between monthly or weekly payout cycles.
  • Multilingual support: Support available in English and Japanese from teams based in Japan.
  • Trusted by global brands: trusted by 20,000+ global stores, including Steam and Daniel Wellington.

Optimize your checkout for local customers

1. Accept preferred payment methods Japanese customers expect from one integration

Remove the need for multiple complex configurations by consolidating Japan’s primary alternative payment networks into a single KOMOJU integration.

  • Digital wallets: PayPay alone has 70 million registered users—more than half of Japan’s population—and handles roughly two-thirds of all domestic QR code* payments. Accept PayPay, Merpay, Rakuten Pay, d-Barai, and au PAY to reach the shoppers driving Japan’s mobile-first checkout habits.
  • Convenience store payments (konbini): Over a third of online purchases in Japan are paid for at a convenience store. Konbini lets shoppers complete an order online and pay in cash at any of Japan’s 56,000+ 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson, Ministop, Daily Yamazaki, and Seicomart locations, 24 hours a day.
  • Carrier billing: Japan’s direct carrier billing market is worth $3.6 billion and growing. Let customers charge purchases directly to their monthly phone bill via NTT Docomo, au, and SoftBank, no card details or extra sign-ups required.
  • Bank transfers: Bank transfers and Pay-easy remain a trusted default for security-conscious shoppers and older demographics who prefer direct account payments over cards or digital wallets.
  • Buy now, pay later: Japan’s BNPL market grew at nearly 56% annually between 2021 and 2024 and is projected to reach $58 billion by 2030. Add Paidy to give shoppers—particularly younger buyers—the option to pay after delivery or split into installments.

2. Built for compliance and native market workflows

KOMOJU is built to automatically handle all of the local financial reporting structures and regional transaction rails that can make entering Japan feel complex. All handled for you, automatically.

  • Accurate currency calculations: Full compliance with JPY formatting and rounding rules to eliminate accounting errors or ledger mismatches.
  • Automated cash payment tracking: Native handling of pending statuses for convenience store checkouts, providing clear customer instructions and automatic status updates the moment the customer pays at the register.
  • Real-time order synchronization: A robust background notification system designed to seamlessly process payment updates, keeping your order logs and inventory levels perfectly matched.

3. Pay-as-you-grow economics

You only pay when you make a sale. No setup fees, no monthly subscription, no minimum volume. Just a flat percentage per completed transaction.

  • No hidden fees: No sign-up fees, monthly account maintenance charges, or minimum sales volume commitments.
  • Simple transaction pricing: Pay a clear, flat percentage-based payment processing fee applied strictly to completed transactions, ensuring you only pay when you make a sale.

Frequently asked questions

How does the convenience store (konbini) payment workflow operate?

When a customer selects konbini payments at checkout, KOMOJU generates a payment screen with a localized barcode and simple instructions. In your WooCommerce dashboard, the order is automatically marked as "Pending Payment." Once the customer pays at their local convenience store, KOMOJU updates the order status to "Processing" in real time, triggering your fulfillment loop automatically and seamlessly clearing the order for you to pack and ship.

Are there any hidden monthly fees?

None. KOMOJU believe that we should only grow when you grow. You only pay a percentage-based payment processing fee per transaction. There are zero sign up fees, zero monthly maintenance fees, and zero overhead costs.

How does KOMOJU handle support?

KOMOJU features dedicated merchant support teams operating directly out of Japan. Instead of navigating auto-translated global support channels, you get direct access to accurate, native troubleshooting documentation and responsive assistance in either English or Japanese.

How secure is KOMOJU for my store?

KOMOJU prioritizes the security of your store with advanced AI-powered fraud detection and dynamic 3D Secure (3DS) authentication. Our platform transmits metadata such as 3DS information and issuer decline reasons to perform thorough fraud checks, ensuring each transaction is legitimate.

Additionally, our built-in fraud prevention system leverages data from all stores on the KOMOJU network, providing an extra layer of security for your business.
