WordPress 2.9 is out!

Written by Magnus Jepson on December 19, 2009 News.

As most of you probably already know, WordPress released version 2.9 last night, with some nice new features added. None of the new features affect any of our themes, and we have updated all our demos to 2.9 and they are working without any problems.

We recommend everybody to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress. If you believe that you have found a bug or compatibility issue with 2.9, then please make a post in our forum, so we can quickly determine if it is caused by the new version.

Does this mean you will incorporate features from WP 2.9 into your old themes? For example post thumbnails take a long time to load on woothemes but with 2.9 they could now be better optimized.

Post thumbnails is a nice addition to wp 2.9, but it’s still not as powerful as our dynamic image resizer. The WP thumbnails are resized when uploaded to server, so it isn’t very dynamic e.g. you can’t change sizes in options, and if you do, your old images will be wrong size. Hopefully in wp 3.0, there will be the possibility to resize images on the fly, instead of when you upload the images.

For now, our timthumb dynamic image resizer is still a better option, and more versatile, even though the load time is a bit longer. You can speed up the load time by using the new timthumb beta which resizes to jpg instead of png. It also supports external sources: http://www.binarymoon.co.uk/2009/07/timthumb-beta-test/
