Good news

Escrito por Mark Forrester on fevereiro 27, 2009 Product News.

Today we’ve launched Newsport, a very stylish and sophisticated magazine based theme which can house a wealth of blog posts on a clean newspaper-styled homepage.

Newsport was one of the design concepts that was originially submitted in the theme contest we ran last year October. It was designed by Armono Wibowo – an Indonesian web designer – who finished in the top 10 of the competition. Armono also designed Typebased which is available for free on Woothemes.

It was then coded by PSDtoWordPress and woo-erized (adding the icing on the cake) by Magnus, who built some nifty functionality into it, spread across 4 widgetized modules. You can do all sorts of cool things using the theme option’s panel, like swop the category based top navigation bar for a page based navigation top bar. You can move the logo to the left and have a 468 X 60 ad banner next to it. You also have complete control over what categories appear where and you can paint your theme 11 different colours.

Find out more about the theme or demo it here.

    I just emailed sales as well but the link to “Demo this Theme” on the right on the page (big button) is bad – it’s linking to Irresistible. I just want to figure out the direct link to I can send it to someone for a recommendation.

    Thx!

    I have a slight feeling, that your new themes are not so strong as the older ones.

    I agreed with Matthias…I was expecting something more “WOW” but it seems like you guys have reach the best level? I hope not because I am a fan of your themes!

    We hear you guys, but you need to consider that your criticism in this regard is based on personal preference and not objective business facts. Judging by the amount of sales / downloads of Newsport already, I can assure you that it is one of our best-selling themes ever in the first few days of release… 🙂

    I disagree with most everyone and agree with Adii. From a personal blogger’s point of view, this may be a “boring” or vanilla design. But as someone who gets more than 3000-5000 hits a day on a content-heavy Web site and is seeking to attract and keep users while making it a good experience for them (which is, by the way, who it’s about), this design and the functionality packed into this theme are intelligent and well thought out.

    Users looks for three things — fast loading, ease of navigation and good content — and take a whole 3 seconds to form an impression. This theme achieves everything, plus it’s clean and less is more. If you want the superficial bells and whistles, have at your CSS and customize it.

    @magnus, @kat,

    But the Navigation looks strange for me. The Gap between Navigatiton and Content looks like an Error. The Tabber Section can be more elegant. The whole Theme seems in my opinion unfinished.

    If you invite us to deal out criticism you must take criticism 😉

    Your most themes are really awesome. but this one is the poorest one, i think.

    sorry!

    I wait for “myweblog”.

    @ZooWorx – The gap between the content does not look like an error to us, nor the designer of the theme. I can agree that the tabber section isn’t exactly sexy, but we wanted to go with the designers original design and keep it basic.

    The theme looks finished to us, and looks like a top notch news theme, but as always, if you want to disagree with 6 designers, that is up to you 🙂

    Myweblog is right around the corner, just need to iron out some bugs.

    BTW, anybody who thinks the gap between the menu and content looks like an error, simply remove this line from the style.css 🙂

    #main {
    margin:15px 0 0;
    }

    @ZooWorx – I just wanted to highlight that there is a difference between criticism and critique. In this regard critique is objective and not based on personal preference.

    So everyone is allowed to have that personal preference and an opinion based on that; we will also gladly accept that criticism. But realize that criticism doesn’t necessarily have influence, wheres objective critique may actually change our minds on a matter! 🙂

    In my opinion, this is a very nice theme. Personally, the more Vanilla in flavour it is, the better it is. This gives the opportunity to change it as you need. The more frill, the less value it has on a larges scale to me, someone who would be using it on a client site, not my own.

    Design is subjective. Adii, Magnus, don’t let it bother you. Take it constructively, but as you know, the amount of business you do with the theme is more important than the minority’s opinion in the comments.

    I like it. My only criticism is that the tabber section sticks out in a bad way. Maybe a lighter color for the background? But there’s nothing from stopping someone from changing that on their own implementation. Love what you guys are producing. Keep it up!

    @kat, oh yea now i got the point, also this might not be ‘sexy’ but it can help generate very good money to high traffic blogs since it’s got too many well placed ad spaces!!!

  23. kat
    março 3, 2009 at 9:55 am #

    @imran — Actually, you missed the point completely. It’s not about money. It’s about painting one’s content in the best possible light and making it easy for the user to access it. As the rockstars above mentioned, personal preference is one thing, constructive criticism is quite another. Saying things like, “it’s not up to the mark” is an opinion to which you are entitled but certainly not objective and not specific. Everyone is also free to come up with their own theme or modify this one.

    The great thing about the world is we’re all different, and that’s beautiful 🙂

    @Magnus, Armono and Adii, I appreciate all the hard work, forethought and coding you put into your themes.

    I have to say that the new themes are very much UNimpressive compared to the old ones.
    I understand that there is a need for every taste but honestly ever since wootube it seems like the quality is going down big time.
    Now I am looking at Newsport and please no offence to the designer, but this is nothing great at all. Sorry, I like to speak my mind. – And of course this is a personal opinion, I just can’t find this new theme any better than some free theme that can be found anywhere else.

    março 5, 2009 at 1:10 am #

    @fgfollow – Ever since WooTube? Don’t you like WooTube either? What about Cushy? They have both been really popular from a statistical view, so I don’t think the quality is lacking in them.

    As for Newsport and Irresistible, they are both WooContest themes, and as we’ve stated before, we think they serve their purpose very well.

    I read with interest the comments made in this post. I will not say whether I like the it or not but I am glad that the theme has some features that indeed make it unique. I mean take a look at the Gazette theme and Newsport. Both have a unique design; ultimately the choice is made based on personal taste. Also thumbs up for redesigning the main page of the Irresistible theme.

    Oh and one more thing: stats can indeed offer an insight to users’ likes and dislikes and can thus help you guide your business decisions. However, what really matters in the end is whether the theme is actually used. Stats should therefore always be interpreted carefully.

    @DR – Sales stats are what we go by, and I think that most who buy a theme will use it. So sale = being used 🙂

    I think its a great theme. Great themes are simple and allow the end user greater flexibility and I believe this theme achieves both.

    How do you add the thumbnails and featured posts though?
