Frequently asked questions

What is WooCommerce Subscriptions?

WooCommerce Subscriptions is a plugin that adds recurring billing to any WooCommerce store. It handles the full subscription lifecycle — initial signup, automatic renewals, failed payment retries, plan changes, and cancellations — so you can sell products and services with predictable recurring revenue.

Which payment gateways support automatic renewals?

Over 25 payment gateways support automatic recurring payments, including Stripe, PayPal, Square, Braintree, Authorize.Net, and WooPayments. For gateways without automatic renewal support, subscribers receive a renewal notification and complete payment manually.

Can customers manage their own subscriptions?

Yes. Customers can view, pause, cancel, and update the payment method for their subscriptions from the My Account page without contacting support.

What happens when a payment fails?

WooCommerce Subscriptions automatically retries failed payments on a configurable schedule. The subscription moves to on-hold status during the retry window and the customer receives email notifications. Pair with AutomateWoo for advanced dunning email sequences.

Can I offer free trials?

Yes. You can set a free trial period on any subscription product. During the trial, no payment is collected. At the end of the trial, the first renewal payment is processed automatically.

Does it work with variable products?

Yes. Variable subscription products let each variation have different pricing, billing intervals, or trial lengths — for example, a monthly plan vs. an annual plan as two variations of the same product.

Is it compatible with WooCommerce HPOS?

Yes. WooCommerce Subscriptions is fully compatible with High Performance Order Storage (HPOS / Custom Order Tables), which is the default database architecture for new WooCommerce installations.

Can subscribers upgrade or downgrade their plan?

Yes. Subscription switching lets customers move between plans mid-cycle. Charges and credits are prorated automatically based on time remaining in the current billing period.

Does it work with WooCommerce Memberships?

Yes. WooCommerce Subscriptions and WooCommerce Memberships are designed to work together. Membership access can be tied to an active subscription — when the subscription lapses, access is automatically revoked.

What support is included?

Your subscription includes one year of updates and support from the WooCommerce team, available via the Help Desk. Access to new versions released during the license term is included.

We weren't successful configuring woocommerce subscription in Argentina. We couldn't even give 1 star because the submit button does not activate unless we give 3. Not too reliable, to be honest.

This extension works just fine and I appreciate it being available to us. However, the reason I did not rate it five stars is because the pricing for this extension is absolutely wild. I could possibly stomach it, if we were allowed to pay in monthly payments, but $280 up-front for a year (then you have to renew for another $280)... I just can't.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we're glad to hear the extension is working well for you! Your feedback on pricing and payment flexibility is genuinely valuable — it's the kind of insight that helps shape how we think about things going forward, and I'll make sure it's noted with the team. If there's ever anything we can help with on the product side, don't hesitate to reach out to our support team.

It is one of the most expensive extensions and urgently needs a fundamental overhaul. Important features such as cancellation periods are simply not available, there are compatibility issues with Woo's official product bundle, and the front-end usability is terrible. Please, Woo, take another look at this important plugin and revise it, otherwise I will have to recommend that my customer switch to another well-known shopping platform for their next relaunch.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to write such detailed feedback. The points you called out (missing cancellation-period options, compatibility issues with our Product Bundles extension, and front‑end usability) are all important, and we understand how disruptive this can be for you and your client. We’d really like to take another look with a bit more detail so we can confirm what’s happening on your setup. In this regard, I’ve gone ahead and created a support ticket for you so we can help get you to a stable, usable setup and make sure the gaps you’re seeing are addressed.

Been using for years, rarely satisfactory and the price just keeps going up because you also have to use memberships plugin it really is very expensive. each new update requires that you have an active annual license even when it was an update that fixed an exploit, that is pretty poor. also where is the changelog? how do i know if i want to pay for a new license to get the new version if I cant see what the new version contains? You pretty much have site owners over a barrel because if you have multiple active customers then you have to upgrade to get the latest version, so you should be more mindful of that when pushing a new version. I also find it is very hard to use and does not really...

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We genuinely appreciate hearing from long-time users like yourself, even when the experience hasn't been ideal. I'd like to address a few of your concerns with some information that might help: Regarding the changelog: You can see the changes in each version by clicking the version number on the WooCommerce Subscriptions product page https://woocommerce.com/products/woocommerce-subscriptions/. We understand this isn't always easy to find, and your feedback here is valuable. About ease of usage: The extension is pretty extensive and has a lot of features, with more being added as it develops. We try as much as possible to simplif...
