Connect an AI client to the WooCommerce AI MCP server

Connect an external Model Context Protocol (MCP) client to your store’s WooCommerce AI server. Use the endpoint generated for your store, then authorize the client and confirm a read-only request before allowing store changes.

Note:

This is a Developer level doc. If you are unfamiliar working with code and resolving potential conflicts, we recommend you work with a Woo Agency Partner for larger projects, or find a WooCommerce developer on Codeable for smaller customizations. We are unable to provide support for customizations under our Support Policy.

Prerequisites

  • WooCommerce and WooCommerce AI are active.
  • Your store and user account are connected to WordPress.com.
  • Your account can manage WooCommerce.
  • The MCP client supports remote HTTP servers and the authentication flow used by the endpoint.

Copy the store endpoint

  1. In WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > WooCommerce AI > Advanced > MCP server.
  2. Enable Progressive MCP server if it is off.
  3. Open Setup, choose your client, and copy the generated server URL or configuration.

The WordPress.com URL includes your store identifier. Its structure is:

https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/sites/{site}/woocommerce-ai-mcp/v1

Copy the complete URL from your store’s Setup screen, including its store identifier.

Example: Claude Code

Follow Claude Code’s MCP instructions for your installed client version. Add the copied endpoint with:

claude mcp add --transport http woocommerce-ai "YOUR_COPIED_SERVER_URL"

In Claude Code, open /mcp and complete the authentication flow when prompted. The WordPress.com connection uses OAuth on first use; this path does not require copying a WooCommerce consumer secret into the client configuration.

Verify the connection

Confirm that the client lists the server as connected and discovers its tools. Start with a read-only store query and compare the returned result with WordPress admin. If authentication or discovery fails, check the copied endpoint, site and user connection, and the client’s error before retrying.

Manage exposed tools

Return to the MCP server settings to enable or disable the tools exposed to external clients. Changes save as you change the controls. A disabled tool is removed from discovery and rejected if a client tries to use it. These controls are distinct from chat ability settings.

Combined exposure groups read tools behind the load-provider and execute-tool helpers. In this mode, the settings table shows those two helpers with fixed, disabled toggles. Individual exposure lists tools directly and provides per-tool controls. After changing the exposure mode, refresh the client’s tool list to see the available tools.

Optional: direct API-key connection

Developers can connect directly to the store endpoint using a WooCommerce REST API key. Use the endpoint:

https://your-store.example/wp-json/woocommerce-ai/mcp

The direct transport accepts the X-MCP-API-Key header in consumer_key:consumer_secret format. Use a dedicated key with the least required permission and keep its secret in the client’s supported secure configuration. Read keys permit read operations; write or read/write keys permit the corresponding writes. Keep the key out of screenshots and shared files.

Follow your client’s official instructions for adding the API-key header.
