QR Code by QodeVault

QR Code by QodeVault lets you create QR codes for your store from your WooCommerce admin. Point a code at a product or any web page, style it with your colors and logo, and download it print-ready. With dynamic QR codes, you can change where a code points after you print it and see how often it’s scanned.

Installation

Setup and Configuration

Getting started

Once activated, the plugin:

  • Adds a QR Codes Generator menu item under WooCommerce in your admin sidebar
  • Create the QR code

Find your way around

Go to WooCommerce > QR Codes Generator. The extension has four tabs:

  • Dashboard: how many QR codes you have (total, dynamic, and static) and your most recent codes.
  • My QR Codes: every QR code you’ve created, with tools to download, edit, delete, and view analytics.
  • Create: make a new QR code.
  • Help: frequently asked questions and a link to contact support.

Only users who can manage WooCommerce, such as Administrators and Shop Managers, can open these screens.

Create your first QR code

  1. Go to WooCommerce > QR Codes Generator and select the Create tab.
  2. In the Settings card, enter a Title. Only you can see it; it helps you find the code later.
  3. In the Content card, choose a QR Code Type, then fill in its fields. The QR code types section below lists what each type needs.
  4. In the Design card, style your code. The Preview updates as you make changes.
  5. Select Save. The button stays disabled until all required fields are filled in correctly.

After saving, you return to the list of QR codes, where you can download your new code.

Product QR codes

The code points to the product’s page. If you haven’t entered a title yet, the product’s name is used. To pick a different product, select Change product.

  1. Choose Product as the QR Code Type.
  2. In Search products, type a product name or SKU.
  3. Select a product from the results. Each result shows the product’s image, SKU, and price.

Only published products appear. Drafts, private products, and products pending review don’t.

The QR code saves the product page’s address as it was when you selected the product. If you later change that product’s URL (its slug), edit the QR code and select the product again. For a dynamic code, the printed code then opens the new address. You don’t need to update a product’s price, stock, or description, since the code simply opens the product page.

Wi-Fi QR codes

Wi-Fi codes are always static, because phones read the network details directly from the code. If you change your Wi-Fi password, create a new code and replace the printed one.

For Encryption, choose WPA/WPA2 (most modern networks), WEP (older networks), or No encryption. Turn on Hidden network if your network doesn’t broadcast its name.

Event QR codes

The end time must be after the start time. Reminder sets when the phone alerts the person: when the event starts, or from 5 minutes to 1 week before.

Location QR codes

Enter a Latitude and Longitude, or type an address or place name under Search location (optional) and select Search. The preview uses sample coordinates until you enter your own.

The address search uses OpenStreetMap. When you select Search, the text you typed is sent from your browser to OpenStreetMap’s search service. Nothing is sent if you type the coordinates yourself.

Dynamic and static QR codes

A dynamic QR code holds a short link. When someone scans it, the QodeVault service sends them on to the destination you set. Because the destination is stored by QodeVault rather than in the printed code, you can:

  • Change where the code points at any time, without reprinting it.
  • See scan analytics.

A static QR code stores its content in the code itself. You can’t change it after you print it, and it has no analytics.

New QR codes are dynamic by default. To change that, open the Settings tab in the Design card and turn Dynamic QR on or off. Every type except Wi-Fi can be dynamic.

Switching an existing code between dynamic and static changes its pattern, so download it again and replace any printed copies.

Design your QR code

The Design card has four tabs. Every change shows up in the Preview right away.

Shape
  • Pattern: the shape of the small dots that make up the code. Choose from 19 patterns.
  • Marker corners (outer): the outer frame of the three large squares in the corners. Phones use these markers to find the code. Choose from 19 styles.
  • Marker centers (inner): the solid center of each corner marker. Choose from 26 styles.
  • Frame: a border with a text label, such as “Scan me,” around the code. Choose from 11 frames, or none: Top, Bottom, Phone, Cine, Balloon Top, Balloon Bottom, Ribbon Top, Ribbon Bottom, Tag, Tag Fill, and Shopping Bag.
  • Frame label: the text shown on the frame. The Tag, Tag Fill, and Shopping Bag frames don’t show a label.
  • Label text size and Label font: the label’s size and font (Sans-Serif, Serif, or Monospace).
  • Logo: select Upload logo… to place an image in the middle of the code. Select Remove logo to take it out.

When you add a logo, set Error correction to High on the Settings tab. The logo covers part of the code, and High error correction keeps it scannable.

Color
  • Foreground: the color of the dots and markers. Pick a preset or choose your own color.
  • Background: the color behind the code.
  • Gradient: blends the foreground from one color to a second color. Turn on Radial gradient to blend from the center outward instead.
  • Custom Marker Colors: gives the corner markers their own colors. Marker border and Marker center apply to all three corners.
  • Individual Marker Colors: gives the top-right and bottom-left markers their own border and center colors. The top-left marker keeps the colors set under Custom Marker Colors.

For reliable scanning, use a dark foreground on a light background with strong contrast.

Settings
  • Dynamic QR: turns dynamic mode on or off. See the Dynamic and static QR codes section above.
  • Error correction: how much of the code can be covered or damaged while it still scans:
    • Low (~7%)
    • Medium (~15%), the default
    • Quartile (~25%)
    • High (~30%)
Higher levels make the code denser. Use High when you add a logo or when the code may get scuffed, for example on packaging.

Test before you print

Before you print a batch, scan the code with at least two phones, such as one iPhone and one Android phone, using their built-in camera apps. Also check that:

  • The printed code is at least 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) wide. Make it larger if people scan it from a distance.
  • There’s empty space around the code, with no text or images touching it.
  • The colors have strong contrast, and the code isn’t printed on a shiny or curved surface that causes glare.
  • A dynamic code opens the right page after you save it.

Download a QR code

  1. Go to the My QR Codes tab. You can also use the Recent QR Codes table on the Dashboard.
  2. In the code’s row, select Download.
  3. Choose a File type:
    • PNG: best for websites, emails, and most printing.
    • JPEG: for tools that need JPEG. JPEG files always have a white background.
    • SVG (vector): scales to any size without losing quality. Best for large prints and professional printers.
  4. For PNG or JPEG, choose a Size: Small (200 px), Medium (500 px), Large (1000 px), or Custom, between 100 and 4000 pixels wide. Size doesn’t apply to SVG.
  5. Select Download.

Manage your QR codes

The My QR Codes tab lists your codes, 10 per page. Use Previous and Next to move between pages. Each row shows:

  • a preview,
  • the title,
  • the type,
  • whether the code is dynamic,
  • the number of scans (dynamic codes only).

The search box filters the codes on the page you’re viewing by title or destination URL.

Edit a QR code

Select the code’s title, or click Edit in its row. Make your changes, then select Save.

  • Dynamic code: if you change only the destination, the printed code keeps working and opens the new destination. If you change the design, download the code again to use the new look; copies already printed still work.
  • Static code: any change to the content changes the code itself. Download it again and replace printed copies.
Delete a QR code

Select Delete in the code’s row, or Delete on its edit screen, then confirm.

  • A deleted dynamic code stops redirecting. Anyone who scans it sees a page saying the code is no longer active.
  • A static code keeps working wherever it’s printed, because its content is stored in the code itself.

You can’t undo deletion from the extension.

Scan analytics

Analytics are available for dynamic QR codes. To open them, select Analytics in the code’s row on the My QR Codes tab, or Analytics on its edit screen.

Choose dates with From and To. The last 7 days are shown by default.

The page shows:

  • Total scans (all time): every scan since you created the code, whatever dates you choose.
  • Scans in range: scans between your From and To dates.
  • Total users: the number of people who scanned each day, added up over the date range. Someone who scans on two different days counts twice.
  • Peak daily scans: the most scans on a single day in the range.
  • Daily scans: the number of scans on each day.
  • Daily unique users: the number of different people who scanned on each day.
  • Top country, top city, top browser, and top device: the most common of each, with its scan count.
  • Devices, Browsers, Cities, and Countries: the top 8 of each, with scan counts and percentages.

Locations are estimated from the scanner’s internet connection, so treat them as approximate. Devices and browsers come from the phone’s browser information.

Tips and best practices

  • Use high error correction when embedding a logo — the logo covers part of the QR code data, and higher correction ensures it still scans correctly.
  • Test before printing — always scan your QR code with at least two different devices/apps before using it on printed material.
  • Keep contrast high — ensure strong contrast between the foreground and background colors for reliable scanning, especially in low-light environments.
  • Dynamic codes for campaigns — if you are running a time-limited promotion, use dynamic mode so you can redirect the QR code to a new page after the campaign ends.
  • SVG for print — when sending a QR code to a printer, download as SVG for lossless scaling to any print size.

Privacy and your data

QR Code by QodeVault uses the QodeVault service, operated by Entangle Commerce. Here’s what’s shared and stored.

Sent to the QodeVault service:

  • Everything you enter for a QR code: its title, content, design settings, and logo image.
  • For Product codes: the product’s name, SKU, and image address.
  • To identify your store: your site address, plus a store ID and secret key that are generated automatically.

QodeVault creates and stores your QR codes and runs the short links for dynamic codes. When someone scans a dynamic code, QodeVault records the scan, including an approximate location, device type, and browser, so you can view your analytics.

Stored on your WordPress site: only the store ID and secret key. Your QR codes aren’t stored in your WordPress database. The extension doesn’t read or send your orders or customer records, and it adds no tracking or cookies to your storefront.

QR code images: your browser loads previews from QodeVault’s file storage on Amazon Web Services (Amazon S3).

Address search: only for Location codes, and only when you select Search. Your search text goes from your browser to OpenStreetMap’s search service.

Subscription check: WooCommerce checks your subscription itself, on your site. Your WooCommerce.com account details aren’t shared with QodeVault.

If you use dynamic QR codes, consider mentioning QR code scan tracking in your store’s privacy policy. QodeVault’s own terms of service and privacy policy are published on the QodeVault website.

If your subscription ends

If your subscription expires or is canceled, the QR Codes Generator screens show the Activate QodeVault card. You can’t create, edit, or manage your QR codes until you renew. The Help tab stays available.

Your QR codes stay saved. After you renew, select Refresh on the Activate QodeVault card, and your codes are back.

Deactivate or uninstall

Deactivating the extension hides its screens. Nothing is removed, and everything is back when you reactivate it.

Uninstalling (deleting the extension from your Plugins screen) removes its settings from WordPress, including the store ID.

Your QR codes aren’t deleted from QodeVault. But if you install the extension again later, your store gets a new ID, so codes you made before won’t appear in your list. You can’t edit them or see their analytics from the new installation.

Before you uninstall:

  • Download any codes you still need.
  • Delete any dynamic codes you want to stop working.

Troubleshooting

The Activate QodeVault card keeps showing
  • Go to WooCommerce > Extensions > My Subscriptions.
  • Make sure your store is connected to WooCommerce.com and the QR Code by QodeVault subscription is active, not expired, and connected to this site.
  • Return to WooCommerce > QR Codes Generator and select Refresh.

If it still shows, contact support.

The Save button is disabled

A required field is empty or not filled in correctly. Check that:

  • The Title is filled in.
  • All required fields for the QR type are filled in.
  • Web addresses start with http:// or https://.
  • Phone numbers have at least 7 digits.
  • An event’s end time is after its start time.
  • A Wi-Fi code has a password, unless Encryption is set to No encryption.
The preview says “Enter a valid URL to preview your QR code.”

The destination isn’t a complete web address yet. Type the full address, including https://.

Only published products appear. Publish the product, then search again by its name or SKU.

The QR code won’t scan
  • Use a dark foreground on a light background, with strong contrast.
  • If you added a logo, set Error correction to High.
  • Print the code larger, and leave empty space around it.
  • For small prints, try the Default pattern and corner styles, which are the easiest for phones to read.
There’s no Analytics button for a code

Analytics are only available for dynamic QR codes. The code is static, so it shows “Scan analytics are only available for dynamic QR codes.” You can make it dynamic on the Settings tab in the Design card. This changes the pattern, so download and print the new version.

My QR codes are missing after reinstalling

Reinstalling gives your store a new ID, so codes created before you uninstalled don’t appear. See the Deactivate or uninstall section above.

Screens show an error, or downloads fail

The extension needs your web server to connect to the QodeVault service at app.qodevault.com over HTTPS. A firewall, security plugin, or hosting setting that blocks outbound connections can cause errors such as “Could not load status.” or “Download failed.” Ask your host to allow outbound HTTPS connections to app.qodevault.com.

Previews are blank

Your browser loads QR code previews from Amazon S3 (amazonaws.com). An ad blocker, privacy extension, or office network filter may block them. Try turning off the extension for your site, or use another network.

The location search finds nothing

Try a shorter address or a well-known place name. Or enter the Latitude and Longitude yourself; you can copy them from most map apps.

FAQs

Help customers by answering commonly asked questions.

Who can use the extension in my store?

  • Anyone who can manage WooCommerce, such as Administrators and Shop Managers.

Can I change a static QR code after printing?

  • No. A static code’s content is stored in the code itself. Create a dynamic code if you might need to change the destination later.

Does a Product QR code show the latest price and stock?

  • Yes. The code opens the product page, which always shows its current details.

Does the extension add anything to my storefront?

  • No. It runs only in your WordPress admin. It’s compatible with High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS) and the Cart and Checkout blocks.

Is the extension translation-ready?

  • Yes. It includes a translation template, so it can be translated with standard WordPress translation tools.

Does scan tracking follow shoppers around my store?

  • No. QodeVault records a scan when someone scans a dynamic code before they reach your page. The extension adds no tracking to your storefront.
