Getting started

Dynamic Metal Prices calculates product prices from gold, silver, or platinum weight, markup, and optional fixed extras. You need WordPress 5.8+, WooCommerce 6.0+, and PHP 7.4+.

To set up your store:

  1. Install and activate WooCommerce.
  2. Install and activate Dynamic Metal Prices from your WooCommerce.com account.
  3. Go to WooCommerce > Metal Prices.
  4. Choose a Price Source for each metal (live API or Manual API).
  5. Enter API keys if using live rates, or manual price per gram for manual pricing.
  6. Click Save Changes.
  7. Edit a product, set Metal Type, Weight, and Markup %, then click Update Price Now.

Advanced configuration

Under WooCommerce > Metal Prices you can configure:

  • API keys โ€” GoldAPI.io (Premium), GoldPricez (Free), MetalpriceAPI, SiftingIO
  • Price source per metal โ€” gold, silver, and platinum can each use a different source
  • Automatic update frequency โ€” scheduled bulk updates via WordPress cron (match your API rate limits)
  • Global prices per karat โ€” optional per-gram prices for karat oneโ€“24
  • Shortcode display customization โ€” labels for [gold_price], [silver_price], [platinum_price]
  • Debug logging โ€” writes to WooCommerce > Status > Logs (source: dynamic-metal-prices) while testing

GoldPricez free keys require email activation. Use Metal Prices > Free API Registration for steps. Manual pricing does not send data to external services.

Usage

Price formula: (metal price per gram ร— weight) ร— (one + markup % รท 100) + fixed extra. Weight can be grams or ounces. Each product or variation uses one metal type at a time.

Products and variations

On simple products, open Product data > General, choose metal type, enter weight and markup, and click Update Price Now. On variable products, set metal fields on each variation. Category defaults apply when product fields are empty (Products > Categories).

Shortcodes (storefront)

Display reference metal prices on pages or posts:

  • [gold_price], [silver_price], [platinum_price]
  • Optional format: full, price_only, per_gram, per_ounce
  • Optional currency attribute (defaults to store currency)

Run Update Metal Prices from the Metal Prices menu to refresh all configured products and variations at once.

Troubleshooting

Prices are zero or do not update โ€” Confirm rates on Metal Prices settings, verify API keys and price sources, ensure weight and markup are set, then use Update Price Now or bulk Update Now.

API rate limits โ€” Use a longer automatic update interval, avoid repeated manual updates, complete GoldPricez activation, or switch a metal to manual pricing.

Different prices on shop and product pages โ€” Clear site and CDN cache; run a bulk update so variable product price ranges sync.

Scheduled updates never run โ€” WordPress cron depends on site traffic; use server cron or manual bulk updates on low-traffic sites.

Shortcodes show nothing โ€” Live source may be down; check settings status. Shortcodes hide API errors from shoppers and output empty when rates are unavailable.

FAQs

Do I need an API key?

  • No. Set Manual API and enter per-gram prices for gold, silver, and platinum. API keys are only required when you choose a live price source (GoldAPI.io, GoldPricez, MetalpriceAPI, or SiftingIO).

Which metals are supported?

  • Gold, silver, and platinum. Each product or variation uses one metal type at a time.

Does it work with variable products?

  • Yes. Each variation can have its own metal type, weight, karat (gold), markup, and fixed extra. Bulk updates include variations and refresh price ranges.

Can I set defaults for a whole category?

  • Yes. Category-level defaults apply when product fields are empty, so new products in that category inherit standard weight, karat, and markup.

Is it compatible with HPOS and checkout blocks?

  • Yes. The extension declares compatibility with WooCommerce custom order tables (HPOS) and cart/checkout blocks.

I used an older gold pricing pluginโ€”will I lose data?

  • Dynamic Metal Prices uses the same product meta keys as Dynamic Gold Price for WooCommerce Products. Existing weight, karat, markup, and fixed extra values are preserved; a migration tool is available in the admin if needed.

Where do I get support?

  • Use WooCommerce.com support for this product from your account subscription page. Include WordPress, WooCommerce, and PHP versions, plugin version, price sources in use, and steps to reproduce. Do not post full API keys in tickets.
