Standard Checkout Experience Guide

NOTE: Now that the Optimized Checkout Suite has been released to all users and the legacy checkout retired, this doc is outdated and will be removed soon. We recommend using the Optimized Checkout Suite option if possible.

The Standard Checkout Experience is a modernized version of the Stripe extension’s payment form. As of version 9.6 of the extension, it is now the default for all installations.

The advantages of using the Standard Checkout Experience are numerous. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Customers can choose their preferred card brand during checkout.
  • Additional payment methods can be used in the checkout block.
  • Some additional payment methods can be saved to customer accounts.
  • Link by Stripe can be disabled if needed.
  • The order of Payment Methods can be manually sorted.

Enabling

Updating to the most recent version of Stripe for WooCommerce will automatically make the Standard Checkout Experience available— version 9.6 or greater. To update your extension:

We recommend enabling automatic plugin updates. Follow these instructions to allow auto-updates.

If you do not receive automatic plugin updates, you can update to version 9.7 by following the below steps:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Dashboard > Updates.
  2. Click the Check again link to check for plugin updates.
  3. If an update for the WooCommerce Stripe Gateway plugin is available, install it.
  4. Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins.

Here’s how the Dashboard > Updates page will look if a WooCommerce Stripe Gateway update is available to be installed:

After ensuring the most recent version of the plugin is installed:

  1. In your WordPress admin, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Settings.
  2. Scroll to Advanced Settings.
  3. Uncheck the box for “Automatically display the most relevant payment methods”
  4. Click Save Changes at the bottom.

Place an order or two in test mode to confirm that things are working normally.
