Bulgarian lev (BGN) transition to Euro (EUR)

On January 1, 2026, Bulgaria will join the Eurozone. This means that the Bulgarian lev (BGN) will be discontinued and replaced by the Euro (EUR) on that date.

If your WooPayments site uses BGN in any way (for example, by taking orders or receiving payouts in BGN, please read the entirety of this document.

What you need to do

In order to make the switch from BGN to EUR as smooth and painless as possible, you should complete the following items before December 30. Doing them as soon as you can, rather than at the last minute, will help avoid any complications or delays.

  • If your store has BGN as the base currency (under WooCommerce > Settings > General) you should change that to EUR before the January 1 deadline.
    • If you changed base currencies, you may also want to update your prices afterward. The official conversion rate is 1.95583 BGN to 1 EUR, so simply halving your BGN prices will produce a roughly equivalent EUR price. Not converting may result in products with artificially large EUR prices.
  • If you use the WooPayments multi-currency feature to take payments in BGN, you should remove that currency from the Enabled currencies list and (optionally) add EUR instead. You can do that under WooCommerce > Settings > Multi-currency in your WordPress dashboard, then click Add/remove currencies.
  • If you receive BGN payouts from WooPayments into your bank account, you should add a bank account denominated in EUR instead, and then remove the BGN bank account. You can do that by following the instructions on this page.
    • If you already have both EUR and BGN bank accounts, the BGN account will be removed on December 30, and the EUR account will be used thereafter.

What happens to BGN account balances?

On December 30, any BGN in available account balances will be converted to EUR using the official fixed rate of 1.95583 BGN to 1 EUR. Pending BGN balances will be converted to EUR on January 5 using the same fixed rate. You will not incur foreign exchange fees or currency conversion fees for this.

After conversion, the balances will be paid out to the EUR bank account you have on file in accordance with your usual payout schedule.

How will WooPayments fees change?

On January 1, we will begin charging fees to Bulgaria-based merchants in EUR instead of BGN. The fees will be changing to the following:

Please note that our fees page will always reflect the current fee structure. As such, you can expect that document to show the fees in BGN up until the transition on January 1, at which time the chart will change to match the one above.

How will refunds and disputes work?

Refunds and disputes of any payments processed in BGN before January 1 will be processed in EUR starting at 00:00:00 EET on January 1, 2026.

What about authorize and manual capture?

If you use the manual capture setting to capture charges after from authorization, you will not be able to capture BGN charges after January 1. Our advice in these cases is to cancel the authorization and have the customer place another order in EUR.

Authorizations and captures in EUR will always work, even if the authorization happens before the deadline and the capture happens after.

What happens if I do nothing?

If you do not complete the steps detailed above before the January 1 deadline, your BGN bank account will be automatically disabled and a new EUR bank account will be created for you using the same IBAN.

This is happening because most BGN-denominated bank accounts will keep the same IBAN when converting to EUR on January 1.

Of course, the safest route is to confirm the details of your EUR bank account with your bank themselves, and then complete the steps above well ahead of time.
